Fletch

Here we go again.....

I find it sad that I got the 6 Million Dollar man reference and the show is about 20 years older then me. This is what you get when you actually have to spend time with your parents because of a concussion.

That sucks Fletch. Hope you're surgery goes well and you can get on the ice and at least skate sooner than later. Congrats on the new addition to the family though.

Thanks! I really do think the new little one will make the time fly by....hell, I can't believe 2008 is already almost half-over. Crazy....

Shit! Let me know how it goes, man! Good luck!

If it makes you feel any better, I skated for the first time since both surgeries the other day and aside from a little soreness in my left foot (10 months post-op) and a lot of soreness in the right foot (only 5 months post-op), I felt pretty damn good out there. Now only if my damn shoulder wasn't tweaked, I'd be almost ready for games....lol. In any case, I am still happy I had the surgery and when I am done rehabing my shoulder I will be in tip-top.

Oh, and I was finally able to purchase a good pair of skates - One95's. After having them baked with some foam padding in the navicular bone area, they fit great and I had no pain at all skating on them that was related to the skates. That made my day, let me tell ya.

man thats great, i'm jealous about your new purchase...

Me I'm doing good, the surgery went well and the pain is virtually nonexistent...

So much so that I'm kind of disappointed, it will be hard to stay off it foe 6 weeks...

I'll keep you posted

That's the nerve block....you'll start to get some pain soon (sorry) but it won't be too bad. Crutches for 6 weeks will suck, no doubt about it. Just stock up on the DVD's/Xbox 360 games/porn and you'll be fine. ;)

Luckily, I only squander all of my athletic ability on hockey ;)

How's it doing these days when you play? Any pain? My brother had the exact same surgery when he was 32 (strangely enough, my age) and I want to ask him about it but he's in Ireland right now. I know he was fully recovered after 4 months though....not sure why my doc is saying my recovery time will be 6 months. Maybe mine's worse than his was.

don't worry about recovery times. when i had my acl replaced the doc told me 8-9months recovery. i was skating at 16 weeks, no turning though and not very hard. one week before 6 months i was playing again, though i still couldn't skate too well. just wasn't comfortable yet, that took about another 6-8 weeks.

but none the less good luck with your mulitpule recoverys.

Thanks man. I skated again the other night and had some soreness in the feet but it wasn't bad. We played for 2 hours and I didn't have to quit early, so that's good. And my shoulder, surprisingly didn't bother me too much (maybe I just didn't notice it because of the adrenaline).

wow 2 hours, thats great news mate...

I'm happy to hear you are skating again, me on the other hand i might have suffered a setback...

2 days ago while taking a bath, i fell and hit my foot, this being said, i'm worried that the implant moved...

I did go to the doc today to try and confirm placement to no avail, the people here had no clue what x-ray to take to see it from the front and wen they finally got it right the quality of the shot was only enough to tell that the implant was in the foot

Anyway, I'm hoping for the best since my doc in Detroit is to far to check... but he sais not to worry since it's supose to be in there solid....

Hmmm....I had an accident like that too with my first operation where I slipped on a wet spot at the floor of a restaurant over here after having a margarita with my dinner, lol.....I rushed to the doctor so he could x-ray it to make sure it was ok and it was but I was worried. Are you in a lot more pain now after the fall? Pain in that area specifically? I'm sure it's fine if your Doctor is saying it is....I believe my doctor said the same thing.

Was it 1 of those giant glass margaritas? And did you spill any of your drink?

Haha...no, it was a margarita from Chipotle and we were on our way out when my crutch slipped on some water on the floor in there. Those margaritas they have are strong (seriously!).

wow, i'm glad I clicked on this link. I had this surgery done on my left foot 2 yrs ago and i'm still recovering :(

my surgeon did the ankle implant as well but it was very uncomfortable and I had to have it taken out. my pronation was not as severe as yours it sounds like but if I took any time off from playing, my ankle pain got so bad I developed a pretty bad limp. My arch was raised by fusing the two bones in the mid foot, which had to be done again last year and is still not fully healed. But it is healed enough that I don't really experience any pain when playing. All in all, I spent almost 7 mos. on crutches. Needless to say its been alot of work to get my leg built back up and I still have a ways to go.

I have one question for you though. Did you experience a loss of soft tissue in the bottom of your foot, particularly your heal? I have a hard time walking barefoot and shoes/skates don't fit as well in my left foot because my heal doesn't "spread" out when in the boot/shoe and it feels like i'm walking on bone almost. And there's a noticeable difference in the size of my heal pad from right to left. It's not really painful just kind of annoying and uncomfortable.

anyway, glad to hear you guys have done well with your surgeries. The more I read about others experiences, the more I think mine might have been botched but I don't know how I could ever prove that.

wow your story is bad, 7 months seems extreme for an implant from what I was told and my research...

Im only 11 days post op and I'm not really in pain but the nerves in my foot are not happy in the ankle area, also from how i feel right now I have a hard time believing that my foot will function properly but it was not working well to start with...

I too experienced allot of pain wen I took time off skates as if the skating was helping the foot keep loose...

bone fusion will be last resort for me, im really not feeling that because if you don't like it your SOL...

give us more detail about what you had done, like I had a Gastroc recision and a Implant...

Sayin' my prayers for you man. I tore my deltoid ligament on my right foot and did some other nice soft tissue damage at 15. Man, that was a huge biotch. I can only imagine what you've gone through, I hope you come back bigger, faster, stronger, we have the technology!

docs usually give a longer recovering time, at least that way you wont get your hopes up.

best of luck with the recovery ...

Yeah, there were many things I would do differently if I had a second chance. First off, I rushed into it without doing enough research. The doc convinced me recovery would only be around 5 - 7 months so I wanted to get it done asap so I wouldn't miss too much of the season. He also convinced me that it wasn't that major of a surgery but if I had spent more time researching it, I would have found out that he was full of shit. It was big time what I had done.

I had 4 things done initially and sorry, I don't remember the fancy medical terms for it. I had my heal completely severed and moved toward my instep by 1.1 cm and a screw was put in to hold in place until it healed. Then, my achilles tendon was lengthened, the mid-foot fusion and the implant. I was on crutches for almost 4 mos. after the first surgery. That was Aug. '06. I was playing again by the end of Jan. 07 but in pain. In Dec. '06 I had the heal screw and implant removed. In summer '07, they determined through a CT scan that the midfoot fusion was not healing so I had another surgery by a different surgeon last Oct. to redo that. It was still not healing as of May of this year and I have been using a bone growth stimulator every day since then to get it to heal. The pain is alot better and I can walk without a limp most of time and it doesn't hurt to skate but I feel it always.

So that's where I stand as of now. When it finally heals on the fusion and if the pain doesn't get better, i'm going to have the plate taken out that's in there now and see what that does. If that doesn't help, i'll go see a pain specialist I know and if that doesn't work, well, I guess i'll just have to live with it.

But let this be a lesson for anyone contemplating something like this: 1. If the doc says its no big deal, don't believe him. 2. research research research more and talk to people who've had it done, especially from the doc who's doing the surgery.

Wow! What you had done sounds more in dept, I dont get how the implant was matched with the bone fusion as they acomplish the same thing, restrict negative movement...

Also thru research I found that Gastroc is the better way to lengthen your Achilles tendon...

As for that heel movement thing, that sounds scary...

Man if I was in your position with the doubt you have I would seriously consider legal action against the first guy because unless I don't know the hole story, that don't sound right, I would think that you would try pairing the ATL (Achilles tendon lengthened) paired with the MBA Implant and see how the foot reacts...

Man what region are you in? if you can make it to Atlanta I might have a person to help you

Yeah, like I said, if I had been smart, I would've had him do it in small phases to see if the problem was corrected while minimizing the surgeries. I do remember discussing that with him and he said it would all have to be done so it was better to get it all done at once. I honestly think I just got a doc who wanted to practice doing the surgery and he saw me a guinea pig. And its my own damn fault for not researching and getting more opinions.

I'm in St. Louis and I would welcome any recommendations. At this point, i'd go to Iraq if I could get rid of this pain. It's not too life altering but i'm just sick of feeling it and worrying about it. I just want to move on and forget I ever had the damn thing in the first place.
