What kind of skates to get?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I have a friend who I pretty much got hooked on hockey and hes just starting out. For just starting he is not bad at all. He used to roller blade all the time and a couple years ago aggresive skate. Anyways he ordered from CCM's and got them and there a bit too big, so he thinks hes gonna return them and he was asking me what kind of skates he should get. Since this is roller hockey, and not ice hockey I don't know what to say. What kind of skates do you think hes be best in? Im thinking something cheaper and not really high priced. Any help would be aprreciated guys, thanks.

A lot of people have been happy with the Gear stuff for beginners and intermediate skates, and some of the Quickchange skates seem to be getting good approval as well....

try the internet and get a higher end model on close out. You get a better skte for the price of the middle ranged one of the current year.

Broken record time; Fit, Fit, Fit

It's worth it to pay some more for a current model that they have in stores so he can try them on and get ones that fit his feet the best. Skates are the most important pieces of equipment to have fit right, which means tight and well. Tell him to block out a 2 hour time period where he can camp out at the nearest hockey stores with good selections of skates and be picky about the fit.

Hey MDE3, the quickchanges are for beginners/int.? I tried them and thought they were quite nice....I like how easy it was to change the wheels... :D

you cant really go wrong with any kind of mission. ive heard good things about the new bauers too...

I agree....can't lose with mission. Also, the higher the end the skate is, the better it will perform. I have seen lot's of D3c's around the rink. Epuck swears by them.

d3c's at epuck

Well I am differentiating from the guys I know who play elite level inline(Pro,AAA etc.) who generally do not use them....they have no need to be able to change wheels quickly in most cases...most have them have been playing so long they have several pairs of skates they can use for different surfaces, if they need to, plus they avoid the added chassis weight.

However in fairness the coaches and refs I know who use the Quickchange skates..gave them pretty high marks for fit etc., plus the new versions are sporting an all 80 mm chassis like the Hum'er.

I understand that their greatest sales have come from Canada, where it is much more common to be switching surfaces, and the quickchange is a nice feature to have.

I think your friend should try to get to a store that has some, so he can try then on.Fit is the most important thing, especially for a beginner.

I concure. :D

I'm telling you I tried those d3c's on and I couldn't believe how comfortable they were... I actually liked them better than the d1cs.. They're not quite as stiff as the D1c's but I think I liked it better because it was easier to skate. The only thing I don't like about them are the wheels (gripper millenium) because they're too soft for me, but there isn't one skate on the market that comes with wheels I keep, because they always put the x-soft wheels on factory.. <_< so it's no big deal.

i havent put the d3c's on my feet, but i have both the d2c's and d1c's. I got the D1C's as a present, and wore them through a season. I got the d2c's a couple months ago, and im never wearing the d1c's again, unless i come across a huge problem. Keep in mind im also using these skates outdoors, and only have come across wheel problems, but thats my fault.
