Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted May 18, 2008 Yep....24 skaters max and 4 goalies max. For my rink we actually call in ahead of time to reserve our spot for the game.

It doesn't help that the owner of the rink I usually go to (Ice Castle in Pittsburgh) said theres a good chance they're going out of business. They need all the money they can get. 15yearsofhistory 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2008 I personally dislike when guys that play semi-pro level hockey show up to pickup with a bunch of kids ages ranged 15-18. Seriously, you're 23 and have nothing better to do but showoff in front of a bunch of people who truly don't give a shit. Then the worst thing is when he has the incentive to repeatedly slash/hook/high-stick/cross-check/tirp you just to preserve his personal ego. Truly classy right there... I have played with a handful of elite JR players in pickup who do nothing more than try to develop the play and lead by example on the ice. Granted there will be a fair amount of guys who feel it necessary to make examples of everyone on the ice with their talents, but there are plenty of fantastic players in pickup hockey that will attempt to integrate all teammates on the ice and teach them how to set up and control the puck and ellevate those around them. Bmplam 1 Report post Posted May 18, 2008 Do you guys get angry if the opposing goalie is terrible?Anyways, there is this one guy at shinny who talks too much. waaaay too much. He speaks for everyone and acts as the ref for everyone. extremely annoying and ruins the fun.I'd rather have a sub-par goalie than shoot posts, put out the shooting board, shoot at a jersey, or put the net down on the ice.+1 ... we just switch goalies every 5 or so goals to keep things even. eric42434224 1 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 I almost always have great experiences in open hockey. I play at Pembroke Pines and Coral Springs in Florida. The average level is around B league, with some beginners, and a few really good guys that obviously played higher level...but ease up a bit for open hockey. It is usually the same core bunch of guys, and everyone plays a good team game, and the majority play good defense as well (at least for the first 60 min of 90, as we all get tired). There are the usual cherry pickers, but only one or two. We play no contact, and have not yet seen a fight. Newbies are always welcome. We do play hard though. Open or pick-up hockey is for fun, but fun and giving 100% are not mutually exclusive. I always skate hard, and play to the best of my ability as it is the only way to really improve my game. I think that the really high level players should'nt go 100% as it can really ruin the game for everyone else, but the players who are arent can give 100% without negatively affecting the game. One should never be discouraged for giving their all in pick-up hockey. My pet peeve: the rink not cutting off the number of players. I hate having 40 guys come out and the rink lets all of them play just to be greedy. Having 7 defensemen on your team is a waste of time and money.
docar15 1 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 1. High sticking of any kind, especially from behind, in your face. And, making a comment afterwards that they did not even feel their stick being that high. I am 6'3", for a person not to feel when their stick is that high up, it has to be one hell of a muscle spasm. Cage or no cage, if you can't keep your stick on the ice, tape to your foot. I've been going to a closed drop-in of mostly senior C and B players. Everyone is typically late 20's and up. Average is probably mid 30's. Anywho, to fill spots and keep the price down, the dude running the thing asked a couple of young kids out. One is going to play jr in alberta next year? Either way, these kids flat out smoke all of us in terms of speed/talent. But they're very cool about it. They pass, they back-check, they hustle to get to lose pucks and then wait for us slow pokes to catch up and try and set us up. It's really raised the quality of the drop-in which is what we're after in this closed drop-in. We save the lolly gagging for the world division and open drop-ins. He isn't doing it in a helpful way though. He just shows up to be a dick. The pick-up usually ends with him talking a handful of shit to everybody and showboating off the hook because he can shoot posts.

JJ Thompson94 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 I was playing pickup at my rink (I don't own it I just live there) and some Jrs. kid comes in but not real good. Had the uniform going, but proabably a jr. B fourth liner. Kid is stick handling around people who can't skate, not passing, taking the longest shifts ever, throwing elbows in the corner, hooking, talking trash just being a real douche. I was playing D with the adult league manager at the rink and finally like 5 min. before open was over he let me rock him. (the whole bench wanted to, and so did he but he'd get fired) This kid is looking down coming at me and I just step up and rock him. My padless, boney shoulder got him right in the face. The whole place started clapping and laughing. He didn't even come at me, he got up and knew the deal. Lets just say he was a different player the next time he came. I love that rink. Ive played in tournaments there and been to camps there. It's also so much better than the rink near the airport. It looks like the boards are about to fall over if you get hit up against them.

layziebone_ 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2008 I didn't want to start a new topic. Anyways I was playing shinny hockey this morning and we had no goalies. So i'm circling around the net waiting for a pass to tip it in. As the pass is coming my way, this dude pushes me and punches me on the back of my helmet. I missed the tip in but the puck went in anyways. My question is, am I not supposed to stay near the net when there's no goalies? Is that a general rule at shinny or was this guy just a douchbag?
