One for the skate fitting Gurus

Recommended Posts

My son has skated 2 seasons now with One90s. I believe the One90s are too deep for him. He has never had one issue with these skates with blisters or soreness, even though he skate barefoot. He claimes they are very comfortable. My question is, is comfort the most important concern when getting fitted for new skates? If his foot does not fill the skate would he perform better with a better fitting skate? My guess is the Graf G3 would be a "better" fit for him. He is skating very well with the One90s, is it worth the risk to change to a very different style of skate for a better fit. This forum is full of post on the importants of skates fitting, is this for perfomance, or comfort. His last set of skates were size 5D in One90s. His next size will be 6. Will going to a C width help with the volume, or only the width? I really want to stick with One90s I see so many kids going from skate to skate and stuggling to readjust. Will the One95 fit similar in volume?

Here are a few photos of how the skates look when on.

Thanks for any help that you can provide

While I am not an expert I can offer these suggestions without being able to see the links.

If he is skating well with the one90 and doesn't have any foot issues, I would suggest not messing with it. I have gone thru a number of different skates and it has affected my ability to improve my skating because I constantly have to readjust to new skates. As long as the skate is not limiting his development, I'd stay with the One90

If the length of the skate is good, does he pass the pencil test. That will determine the correct depth of the skate.

Pencil Test

The true experts will weight in, but this is my experience.

Fit will only effect your performance if it causes discomfort.

As long as a skate doesn't give your son blisters, skatebite etc... And it's a close to perfect fit (which his current skate sounds like) I'd recommend he sticks with it.

Unless you get a completely custom skate, which would be murder especially at his age/size, you'll most likely won't find a skate that fits better than the one90 unless your very lucky.

Maybe another brand/model will fit him better depthwise, but than the arches are too small/big or the heel too wide or...

If your sons skates are fitting him well and he likes them leave it alone for now until he needs some new ones. If it ain't broke don't fix it as it where. Leave well enough alone. When he wears these out then look into getting him to try out some Grafs. My son is in Easton Airs and he loves them. I'd like him to try out some Bauer Vapors but he actually gets angry when I suggest he try some. He says he loves his Eastons and wants them again next time he needs new ones. That's fine with me as long as he is comfortable in them and they are a decent quality and performing skate. Their his feet so I'll just leave him alone with what he is comfortable with.

If you need to reduce volume, go with a thicker footbed than the stock one that ships with the skates.
