New invention: Curved stick

Recommended Posts

Just read in a Swedish newspaper about a new idea of a curved stick, where the part closest to the blade is slightly bent forward.

The player who is supposed to try it out at SEL games (former Mighty Duck Tony Mårtensson of Linköping) however needs a dispensation, similar to Chara's for his long stick. He has used the stick (which seems to be a Salming) at practice for a month and says you get a faster, higher and harder shot, and that it's also useful in close situations because you get closer to the puck faster.

So what do you guys think of this idea?

I thought this was a joke when I read the title :D

I think there is something to this idea. You get the hardest shot when you can flex the stick, and the stick rebounds back forward in the direction of the shot. However, in most action pics I see, the stick is still flexed at release. It seems like this bent stick would be fully extended at release.

It will be interesting if this idea takes off, it will add another variable in stick choice (flex, curve, lie, and now "bend angle"?)

but technically, with this stick, I don't think it would be "fully extended" even if it looked straight at the time of realease... because it's not straight in the first place.

the blade would at least be upright, and perpendicular to the ice. there would be alot less need for loftier sticks.

Mårtensson: One shoots harder

here is the point king Tony Mårtensson's new club.

Skaftet is böjt equal one störtloppsstav and the sprouts will become harder.

- the sprouts go highly and it is of course good in the hockey that is today, says Tony Mårtensson.

It was the sense that Tony Mårtensson would have tested the new club last Tuesday. But 90 minutes before game start said Linköping's sport manager Johan Hemlin that the club was not allowable to play with.

Exemption is required

the Swedish ice hockey association's equipment rules said no.

- that I understood it must skaftet last straightly and since this new club is prone so must one apply for exemption, Mårtensson says.

He has accustomed with the new club in a month and is positive to it.

- one shoots harder with it, entirely clear. It becomes more pressures on the puck and the sprouts goes higher. Since may one away shod quicker and it is good in tränga situations, says Tony Mårtensson.

He hopes that the exemption becomes clear fast and that he sheep to play with it already tonight.

- when one looks on the club so becomes one perhaps sceptical. It sees of course different out. But when one surely a played while with it so intends one not on that it is prone, says Tony Mårtensson.

Loob testade negativt

Skillnaden mellan den nya klubban som Mårtensson nu provar och en gammal ”vanlig” klubba är utformningen av skaftet. Mårtensson's club has one utbuktning on skaftet that does that the player will get out more force from svikten to the puck.

Håkan Loob tested one utbuktning, equal the on Mårtensson's clubs, on his wood clubs for 20 years since, but put down the experiment quite fast.

Perhaps, the invention fits better on kompositklubbor.

prone skaft

Tony Mårtensson tests presently a club there skaftet is not straight without it is one utbuktning long building tea down on skaftet. The reason is that svikten on skaftet will stay overnight straightly the puck. The hockey gang does not permit the club, than so long.

but then, wouldn't recieving passes and stuff be really weird? the blade being perpendicular tothe ice when it's flexed would mean it would face the sky when it's in its natural posture, right?

Ballistik had an idea like this a few years ago. The curve went the otherway and your backhand was offset. It was designed to improve your backhand. It never took off...

So what do you guys think of this idea?

It catches your eye. When I saw it at the Las Vegas trade show, my immediate thought was the sticks had bent during transit. I spoke to Rikard Jonsson, who is Salming's international sales manager, about it and he mentioned the same things as the article, stating that they believe it "preloads" the kick point.

However, I asked him if the stick was legal for play and he said "Yes." Now I'm wondering if what he really meant was, "We're hoping so....."

You can see an Interview I did with Rikard about the NXT stick here.

The Hespeler wood sticks were legal a decade ago, no reason why these wouldn't be.

It was designed to bring your hands ahead of the puck, same idea as an offset driver in golf. It wasn't designed to improve your backhand.

I believe your benefit your was the main purpose of it, now that you mention it... but I spoke with one of the guys at ballistik when it came out... they def thought it would help out with the backhand... that could have just been a secondary benefit

You can't have benefits both ways and backhanders were terrible with offset blades.
