Arch pain with every skate I've been able to try on....

Recommended Posts

I'm currently skating on some RBK 7k's which were the only skates I was able to find in time for the season to start. They are a bit too wide in the heel IMO and too tight in the toe cap (little toe starts to press into/go under the toe next to it). I also have a lot of arch pain with these skates (and *ALL* others I have tried). Supreme 70s fit me best, but no one had them (or could get them) in time, although a shop has a set now that they want $500 for... and even with them I have arch pain after wearing them/walking around for 5-10 minutes.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, not sure.. The people I've talked to about this have asked if I have a high arch and such, and I honestly have no idea.. I'm not sure what a "normal" arch would be as I've never compared my feet to someone elses, not have I ever paid attention to people's feet before...

Just for fun, I also have a round bump about 1" in diameter on the outside of my left foot. I don't get pain there with the 7ks, but have felt pressure there with some other skates (don't recall which ones, I think eastons and one 90s though..)

While those are problems are annoying, the heel I can somewhat fix by pumping the crap out of the 7k's and can ignore the toe.. but this arch pain is bad enough to a point that it's hard to ignore. Maybe I'm tieing them too tight (I don't use a tool or anything, not sure they are all that tight...) or maybe I just need an insert? Not sure, that's why I'm posting here.. you guys know far more than I do about this. Or maybe I just need to get used to it.. no idea.. I haven't skated in a really long time but I don't think this is normal..

If I really should look at other skates, I understand that Graf may be a good choice since they have so many fitments, or maybe a custom fitment? Graf's are not really a local option - the only store that sells them only has two pairs in stock and takes so painfully long to order I'd be better off flying somewhere to buy them. That leaves custom fitment of Bauers/rbk/ccm or going online.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks.

Did you try on Flexlite skates during your search?

I get the same problem with Vector skates. Pretty bad arch pain, and my big toe gets a blister which becomes a callous from the toe box. Vectors are somewhat narrower in the heel, but I still will have trouble locking it in.

see/talk to a podiatrist.

Actually messing with the laces like chk hrd says below is a good first step. I have flat feet and if i lace up too tightly in any boot my arches are screaming in not time. I have it snug at the toes, the looser through the middle and as tight as i can in the last 3.

try playing with how tight you lace up the skates. I have to be more careful lacing up my 9k's because of the skate lock because the laces don't seem to ever loosen up during skating. If I tighten them just a little to tight m foot cramps at the arches.

I did, but they were slightly too small and one size larger was out of stock at the US warehouse at least... I had an issue where I needed skates quickly because a shop failed to order the supreme 70s in time (they forgot then lied about it).

Number21: I will likely set that up soon, I have my annual checkup with my PCP on thursday so I'll get that scheduled then.

willsnipe: I have not, would a LHS carry those? anything in particular I should look for?

chk hrd: I'll play around with the lacing over the next few days. I noticed an improvement when loosening them so maybe I just need to keep loosening them but then I was worried a little more about the heel issue. Once all the new CCM and supremes are in (I don't fit in Vapor's at all) I'll likely go on another skate hunt to see if anything fits perfect everywhere..

Thanks guys!

Usually you get arch pain if you have high arches and crank down on the laces, because you are flattening your arch with no support. I would think that with flat feet you wouldn't have this problem as much.

Try shock doctor insoles. I was having issues with my arches and sides of my feet. The insoles helped the arch and the heat gun on the sides of the boot while standing on them helped that second part.

Superfeet I've heard are better but the Shock Doctors worked for me so why switch now?

Much as WillSnipe mentions, insoles could possibly help.

I had somewhat the same issue when I went from Tacks to Missions - the arch was too high. My solution was plastic inserts cut to the shape of the bottom of the skate under the insoles (but inside the skate). I had them stop just mid-arch. The effect was to essentially "shim" my foot over the height of the arch and it pretty much solved my problem (too bad I couldn't come up with something to cure the toe box being too narrow - but that's another matter).

maybe i have a higher volume foot too, i don't know. but my arches crap up quickly if i don't lace it right.

I have a wide, flat and deep foot with low arches and have found that I can ease most of the pain with Superfeet. Nothing else has helped (Shockdoctor, etc.).

same here...

I use a combination of things that people have mentioned here

1.) thin hockey skate socks

2.) grey superfeet

3.) tighter at the bottom, loose in the middle and real tight at the last three

if I tie my skates tight in the mid section my one90's kill my feet! They took me forever to break in and I had to have a few punch out sessions, I also baked my skates a total of 3 times
