Kevin Porter - Michigan (it HAS to be him)

His season statistics and awards speak for themselves. He is among the national D-1 leaders, so there is no need to review every stat. 'Cough' I won't mention the 5 goals in the first 2 NCAA tourney games 'Cough.'

What is most impressive to me and should be among the voters when considering 'value' & 'leadership'.......

is that the team's 'leader & captain', took 12 young freshmen (yes, 12 freshmen!), threw them all on his back and took them to the Frozen Four as the number 1 seed in the nation!

That's incredible! How can you measure that? What 'value points' can a voter assign to that? That trumps everything! They were picked to finish 4th in their own conference!

........ in essence, that is what the award SHOULD be all about!

What are you thoughts?

(oh yes, I know I'm biased considering I work at Michigan)

Well, I think it HAS to be Nate Gerbe :P . He's the smallest kid on the ice every shift and he's got the same, if not better, numbers than Porter. Gerbe is the most exciting player in the nation when he has the puck, and as he goes the team goes as well.

There are a few players worthy of it. To dismiss everyone but Porter is folly. Porter is a good player, but so is Jones from Miami of Ohio. Duncan and Gerbe are mirror images of each other. This has been a bit of a down year in college hockey, but there are still a few great players considering the guys that Michigan, North Dakota, Boston College and Minnesota lost to the professional ranks over the summer and during the season.

I think Porter is leading in points in college hockey so Gerbe doesn't have the numbers that Porter has. Porter's also up for best defensive forward award which is pretty good for someone leading in points in NCAA D1. Gerbe is so fun to watch though. I've never seen Porter play but Gerbe goes end to end getting around almost everyone, he really stands out on the ice. He also pushes around kids that are afoot taller than him, he's not afraid at all. One finalist that didn't impress me is Ryan Jones. I saw him play last night, he didn't stand out at all or really do anything that good. I don't know if he just had a bad game or what.

I'm a Michigan fan, so I'm slightly biased...but I'm going to have to say Kevin Porter. His numbers this year have been just plain silly and, from what I've heard from a couple of former teammates who are/were in that program, he's a terrific leader.

I'm also backing BC's Gerbe. Great player, tough kid, means a lot to his squad.

I'm ignorant as to Gerbe since I dont follow a lot of BC hockey. What is his story? He seems to be a bit of a jitterbug out there on the ice. Anyone own his draft rights?

i'm gonna have to say gerbe, just because of how exciting he is to watch, you can't help but notice him every night. If UNH had gone deeper into the tournament Kevin Regan would be my pick, but that is extremely biased haha

I saw Gerbe get absolutely rocked with one of the hardest checks ever in last year's Frozen and he got back up as if nothing happened. Never whines or plays like a prick and always goes 100 mph. This kid's franchise.

I think TJ Oshie is as good as any player in the country. He is a very, very good player. Strong on the puck, Great puck handler, and is a team leader. He would have my vote.

How is he known as a trouble maker? He is a great competitor and great in the community. He has had his problems off the ice but what he has accomplished on and off the ice far outweigh the couple times he has gotten into trouble.

Well, quite simply, he is known as a trouble maker because of "his problems off the ice."

Oshie is known as a trouble maker, and NOT worthy of the Hobey Baker.

How is he a trouble maker? He's a natural goal scorer on a team full of them. He'll definitely get a chance to excel at the next level. Too bad the Sioux got him instead of the Gophers.
