Waxed White Laces

Recommended Posts

Does anyone make plain white laces? No blue or black dots or anything...It's a uniform rule. I can't find any and the laces I'm getting won't stay tight at all. I can't find any. Does anyone know if anyone makes them?

what i do (i'm also a ref) is take the blue/black stripes out. I prefer waxed laces and can't find any plain white waxed around here. It takes about 10 minutes...and your hands will be covered in wax, but just take a knife or something and cut the black threads at the top, then just pull until it's all out. You'll make one more cut at the bottom.

Sometimes the lace will bunch up making it hard to get additional black threads out, but if you just cut it off and start over it'll be fine. I can take the black threads out in about 2 minutes now after doing it about 100 times

Hey, your Jarret Gelowitz, right? I searched up my last name on Google and it came up with your name, I was intrigued because I am a ref myself. Thanks for the advice, it's worth a try.

I always chuckled at this "white laces for refs" rule. Seems a bit much.

It's not exactly a "rule" as a guideline. The point is to look professional and presentable so you can be taken seriously before the puck even drops.

I know when i played and saw a ref come out with yellow laces, or pants over the backs of the skate, or a bender bucket, i always laughed and never took him seriously. On that same note, if i was an assignor who had to choose between 2 guys of equal skill for a jr. a game and one of them looked like an idiot and didn't present himself well whereas the other guy was a little better "dressed", guess who i would take.

That attitude trickles down and, if you want the big games, you have to dress and act like you want it. Your appearance is more often than not reflected on your attitude, and why have a guy out there who doesn't want to be? It's beneficial for everyone involved in the game.

Now when i say this i would never sacrifice performance just to "look good" on the ice, even if a supervisor told me otherwise. Some officials would say different and i've even heard stories of supervisors telling officials to get new skates because they weren't "referee skates". ( he had a pair of the white 9k's btw)

black stripes in white laces wont change my outlook of a ref anymore than him wearing solid white laces. true story

Depends where you work entirely. Rinks around here don't give a shit what you wear. I don't even have ref pants, they are a pair of black nylon jogging pants that look identical to the ref pants they sell in the pro shop...Two differences: No CCM tag, 10 dollars instead of 65. That goes for laces as well, they don't give a shit.

Wait, you have to have the pants "tucked" (i use that term loosely; i can't think of a better word for it) into the back of the skate? We were told to keep it outside...where do you ref?

My thoughts exactly. A ref should have the stripes, black pants, black bucket, but I'm willing to let the white laces go. I agree, though, probably shouldn't use colored laces.

Any possibility to get the waxed laces with black stripes and just coloring them in with a white sharpie or white out? Iono just an idea if you didnt want to cut out the black threads.

what, exactly, qualifies as a "bender bucket"?

Just something old...like say a cooper. With a visor not mounted properly (which also voids the CSA certification). Also a scratched up visor or helmet makes it look like everything is just thrown together and that there isnt any pride taken in the job.

I realize that most players don't care about the lace issue, but it's just makes you look a little better.

As for the pants comment...sorry it was late and didn't really read what i was saying, we have the pants out of the skate.....tucked in the back is just ridiculous.

I agree with the black nylon pants too...if they look fine, wear them, i wore them my first 4 years officiating. I like the referee pants a lot better though because of the ability to put suspenders on them, and i find they don't wrinkle as easily. They're also a tougher material so they won't rip. It's when you get to higher levels where your appearance is key. Where i live there's a lot of officials for the amount of hockey, and we're all fighting to do the jr. a and CIS games or just move to the next level so if i can get an advantage by looking more presentable without affecting my performance, then why not?

gelowitz, i ref out of Antigonish, NS

Oh man, yes, the HT1. I have one sitting in the basement, just waiting for the day I'm bored enough to hit the PIAS and trade it for some tape.

Or the Bauer 1000; they're both total clown-hats.

Throw on a rusty white cage with a neon green mouthguard strapped to the bars and you're flying...

I think I would fire pucks at a ref who wore white 9K's. On a more serious note, is that why the majority of refs wear Grafs? (all black and not flashy)
