Upper body equipment question

Recommended Posts

Does any one have any suggestions for protecting the Ribs and underneath.

I had a Liver transplant back on 6/20/07. I started skating on 12/23/07 and have been putting off buying anything new. I currently use old Bauer Flax shoulders (circa 1990). They still protect me well but there isn't much padding covering my scar. Every new shoulder pad I have tried just feels to clunky or doesn't have padding I need. I thought about try buying Football or Lacrosse rib pads and getting them attached to my shouder pads.

Some of the scar is covered but there little to no protection over the liver.

Here is a link for how it looks

My surgeon is more worried about a big jarring collision. I just want be on the safe side.

Does anyone have any ideas????

Thanks Allot in advance.

Maybe something like that a little more forward?

You may want to contact Zoom Bang and see if the padded panel is just sewn on such that you could take it to a seamstress and have the pad moved to your wound.

Best of luck.

You might be able to move this shirt around from back to front.

Thanks, My brother almost got something like that.

Taking a padded shirt would probubly be easier to do.

Thanks again

What about a pair of Farrell's, some good fitting pants and one of those padded shirts? It seems like the combination of those three will have you 100% covered.

I've tried Farrels before and didn't like them. I think I'm going to get a padded shirt. It seems to make the most sense.

Thanks again for all the help.

Sf, I myself had open heart surgury in June of 02, and was skating and playing by Nov. of 02, but I needed the padding higher up in the chest area. My son though had a ruptured spleen which is in about the same area as your scar, but on the left side of the abdomen. We had a specially designed rib pad made by the Riddell company in Stroudsburg , Pa., but it would be far too bulky for hockey. You might want to look at Riddell.com, look for a rib vest that I think they call a blocking vest. For lack of a better way of describing it, it kind of reminds me of a fishing vest with padding. I'm sure those guys could come up with something for you. We do live close to their factory so we just went there and they designed my son's vest specifically for his injury, they make all sorts of special make ups for the pros in football. If you need a phone # and can not find one you can PM me and I'll give you want I have. In fact I just called the person that I dealt with to order my son a new shoulder/rib setup since he got huge after his first season of college ball.

It looks like the scar is more toward the front than the side - I would think just shoulder pads that came down further in the front would work better than those padded shirts (which protect the sides more than the area where your scar is) - something like this?

... I'm not necessarily suggesting those ones (I don't wear them, and I wouldn't reccomend my shoulder pads to anyone looking for any kind of protection), just an example of the padding coming down further in the front than on yours.

I have a friend who donated his liver to his father. Since then, like strosedefence34 suggested, he uses lacrosse rib pads to protect that area. We play in a beer league though.

Here are a couple I found on Amazon. There are also some hard plastic ones on there. Good luck.

Short Sleeve HexPad Body Shirt

3 Piece HexPad Football Bodyshirt

I'll 2nd the Hex-pads. I use the Sher-Wood 5030 shoulder pads and Tackla 5000pro (bottom shell only, no top half) mostly in pick-up. when I go into competitive games I wear the hex 5 padder and a pair baseball/softball 'sliding' shorts under my regular pads. they not only add rib protection, but add some cushioning by suspending the shoulders away from the body.

link shows the layout: http://www.hex-pad.com/basketball/5pad-shirt.htm
