Monty22

Black Bear in my yard

Recommended Posts

So I've taken a few days off from work and I'm hanging out with my 2 month old son. It's warm, so about noontime we take a walk down the driveway and get the mail. It's nice out, so we walk around the house and enjoy some fresh air, looking at trees etc. I'm on 3.5 acres of wooded land, surrounded by woods and farms. At any rate, no sooner do I sit down back inside with little Monty when I happen to glance out the window in time to see a large black bear tear ass through the yard and across the street to a densely wooded tract of land. It was wild to see. Looked to be about 300lbs and was moving pretty fast. Didn't notice if it had ear tags. Our local paper had a few pics of one going through the garbage a few doors down, but that one had half a dozen ear tags on it. I checked out the DEP website, reported the sighting and noted we've had 13 sightings in the last year. Pretty wild to see, just glad I was already in side.

Good thing you didnt have a pinic basket. I saw this documentary from jellystone national park. They had a severe bear problem, tourest were loosing their lunch in semi-hilarious fashion.

wow, thats kinda scary.

living from a somewhat rural community and definetly a farming backround in my grandparents when stuff like this went around i was never allowed outside alone for long periods of time.

One time we had 2 moose run down the middle of our street while i was playing road hockey "sick" from school.

We apparently have a moose here too- the local PD snapped a picture at dawn of one walking down the middle of the road.

During my last trip to Moncton, I saw about 20 deers and one wolf, yes a wolf in southern New Brunswick, crossed the trans-canada highway right in front of me while I was passing a Tahoe (with a Toner sticker on the bumper) and I was going about 140.

We tear many deer apart in the train yard. There is 100s of them because they feed off the grain thats spilt from rail hoppers. There was even an albino deer this winter that was pretty cool to see, although it got tagged a couple weeks ago.

We have deer, black bears, red foxes, coyotes, and my neighbor thinks he saw a mountain lion. None the less, it's gotta be scary when you have your child with you.

Yeah, we have a ton of deer and fox here as well. I hear coyotes, but haven't seen any in years. my backyard has been overun with turkeys most mornings. But like you said, it was scary having my son with me. I don't think he'll be back- I noticed he had been through my garbage can. The top bags were all shit filled diapers.

Do you have fischer-cats? The noise they make is bone chilling. Last time a bear came around here, my genius dog ran up to it, probably thought it was another dog. They came to within ten feet, were face to face, then they both turned around and ran away from each other. It was actually pretty funny afterwards (it wasn't a big bear, about 150lbs or so).
