Pickup/ Adult league hockey in Minnesota

Recommended Posts

It seems like there are a lot of Minnesotans on this board; including myself (Big Lake)..

Do any of you play adult open/league hockey? If so, where and when do you play? There is typically open ice at most arenas, but do any of you play in "open hockey" where someone rents the ice and you pay them per time?

There are two notable adult leagues that come to mind; namely the AHA and the MN Wild Adult League. The latter of which I am a part of. I also skate on thursday nights sometimes at the Super Rink in Blaine.

Anyone else?

AHA Hockey (D1, possibly C2 next year) in the winter, JMS Hockey (do a Google search) in the summer...still not sure if I'm playing summer league or not.

I played in the AHA as well this year. Likely won't be next year though and definitely won't be skating summer league. I also play a pickup invite only once a week. I've heard HNA isn't the same quality of hockey as AHA, but that is just talk, I've never skated in it.

As for open hockey, in the north suburbs, I think Brooklyn Park has a skate Friday and Saturdays. I'm more of a southwest skater, so I don't know the area around Big Lake well.

Winter of '07-'08 was my first year with the AHA, and I really enjoyed it (check out www.ahahockey.com). The officials did a pretty good job, and the league did a decent job of creating a competitive and fun environment. It's pretty affordable too.

As mentioned by a poster above, JMS hockey is another option (see www.jmshockey.com). It's really just pick up hockey with teams (no refs of course). I used to skate JMS quite often, but since joining the AHA I've gone through other avenues to get ice time. JMS is fun and a great way to build fundamentals, but sometimes it is not as intense/competitive as I'd like it to be because the levels of play aren't really well enforced. Sometimes you'll have have several people that are 100 times better than everyone else just ripping it up and scoring about a million goals, and other times it gets to be a bit of a parking lot/pylon party. Depending on your skill level though, it is definitely a great way to work on fundamentals.

Sorry for bumping an older topic, but are any of you guys playing in the MN Wild League in the fall? I started up there last winter on Sundays, continued through the summer and am now subbing in the fall.

I also play in the mens league up at Brooklyn Park.

I'm playing in the Wild league this fall in the C1 North Division (team is District 5). This is my first season playing up in the cities, just transfered to the U from UW-La Crosse. What team/division are you playing for?

If anyone has tips on where and when are good places to play let me know, there's so much up here it's kind of overwhelming trying to figure out where to play pick up.

I just looked at the website, and it says your team is in the South division. I'm in C1 North, and I have been playing for Busters (#18).

Best bet for picking up teams is just starting with one team, and maybe somebody is in another league, or something.
