Removing holder from the boot

Recommended Posts

I am sure someone here knows how do you remove rivets from a boot to take the holder off

first get a hammer and a punch and punch out as many as you can. this is much easier and less destructive on your boot than drilling them out. (i tried to drill them out once and almost ruined my boot) punching them out is both easier and safer. then for the last few rivets in the toe just try to hinge the holder like a lever and pull the remaining rivets out, but be careful when you do it because you can ruin the front of your holders. (if you arent keeping the holders though it is much easier to pull the holder off the rivets and pull the rivets out with a pair of plyers, only downside is that it will ruin your holder)

just make sure to take your time the whole time you are working on these it make take you a couple days but you dont want to end up ruining your skates.

good luck and i hope that helped.

Just take them to a shop that has a rivet press. It will take five minutes and you don't have to worry about wrecking your boot. Prying off the holder when there are still rivets in it is a good way to shred your outsole and the holder.

pry the split/folded down parts of the rivet inside the boot up an straighten them out as much as possible. tap/push gently downward to expose the head of the rivet on the holder side, then grab the head with a pair of vice grips and pull/wiggle. try not to twist too much. this is a little laborious, but no risk of damaging anything.

Until you get to the front of the boot and cant get under the toecap...

i used a 90-degree dental pick for those. every good toolbox has one of those in it. piece of cake.

I can definitely vouch for this method. Its worked fine for me on over 20+ pairs of skates

Me too. I used this method just this past week on my Vapor XXV and it worked beautifully.

On the copper rivets at the back I used a file to file off the stub down to the washer and knocked it out with a punch. Just be careful not to scratch the holder with the file.

If you just want them off, take them to your LHS. We don't charge to take them out. No materials used.

And why bother taking the risk of ruining your $200+ investment. Take it or send it to someone who has done it before

for the copper rivets, I used a punch to put a dent in the center of the rivet (on the outside), then used a small drill bit and drilled till I got to the same level as the washer. Work your way up to a bigger drill bit, so you have a hole in the middle of the smashed out part. Take a pair of diagonal cutters, and cut off the flared out part of the copper, you can use the diagonals to grab the washer and pull it off. Worked like a charm, just make sure you don't get your drill bit out of the impression for the first drill.
