Best Ventilated Helmet for a Larger Head

Recommended Posts

Looking for ideas on a well-ventilated helmet to replace my Carbster. Love the Carbster, but it's not designed to ventilate well. Guess I could remove some padding from the Carbster, but I don't want compromise protection.

I'm an XL in the Carbster (7 5/8) so I don't think a Mission Intake would fit

the bill.

Ideas appreciated ... I did search, but the last post on helmet ventilation was in 2006.

I've got a wide head, large in Bauer/RBK but medium in Mission. Love the intake. Maybe you could fit into a large Mission?

I think my head's about the same size as yours, in terms of hat size (I don't recall exactly what I am). The problem is that it doesn't give you anything but overall circumference, and I was running into fit ear-to-ear issues. They say the RBK helmets are really wide, but I couldn't get my head in them. Same story with the Intake, NBH 4500 and 5500.

Only bucket fitting my head (besides an older Bauer 4000 XL that I'd been using) was the CCM Vector in L. It's somewhat of a squeeze to get in, but once the memory foam compresses a bit it's dreamy how well it fits me.

I have a ridiculously large (7 7/8 hat size), wide/round/Charlie Brown-like head, and the Jofa 690 in a large fits me very well. I tried on an RBK 4k, and it fit as well; making it (and I would assume the other RBK's would fit the same) about the only helmet on the market currently that fits me.

Intake. I wore an XL Carbster and I'm a 7 5/8" and Intake fits just fine. Great ventilation as well.

+1 on the Intake... I wear the same hat size, and I have no issues. The Ventilation is top-notch compaired to my old Bauer. I keep it clean up top, so I feel the air flow through the helmet.

My hat size is 7 1/2 or 7 5/8, depeding on the hat, and the CCM V10 helmet feels really good in large.

The only way I can describe my head shape is if you were standing behind me and I looked straight up, it would be kind of egg-shaped, wider at the back and narrower in the front, although not as extreme as an egg (insert egg-head remarks here). The biggest problem I have with headgear, though, is how tall my head is, I have kind of a long face and a tall forehead, so everything fits really high up on my head, I've had to perform surgery on several bike helmets and hockey helmets to get them to fit down around my forehead properly, I hate it.

The best-feeling helmets I've used are the NBH 4500 (feels great and I want a new one as soon as I can convince the Mrs. that I need it), the CCM HT592, which I don't think they're making anymore and the V10. My wife has a rounder head than I do and was miserable in the HT592. I got her a RBK 8K in medium and it looks like it's tailor-made for her, although when I tried the large on it sat way too high up on my head. The V10 felt pretty breezy, but I'm coming from an HT-style helmet that only has front vents, so anything feels better than that, airflow-wise.

I have an XL 8k and I love it, one thing that's weird is I notice way more cold air on my head when I'm skating backwards. I guess it's just the sensation and where the vents are.

I have a fat head :D

So I am looking to replace my NBH 3500 helmet as I sweat like a pig in it. I am considering wearing a bandana, but I am concerned about the knot from tying it will really interfere with the fit/comfort. As mentioned in this thread and others, it seems the general consensus is that the Mission intake is the best helmet out there for ventilation. I use clippers on my hair (#2 guard) sp I am hoping the air flow will help. Will the difference be that noticable, and what size should I get (none at my LHS) as I am a large in 3500.

Thanks!

Adding a vote for the CCM Vector V08 - so far, I'm pleased with the ventilation - I bought a large and had to adjust the helmet to the smallest setting ... so a large would probably fit just about anyone with a hat size of 7 5/8" or greater.

You might need something like this, regardless of what helmet you use.

I'm liking the 9500 a lot in this aspect.

Same fit as the 3500? As well ventilated as the Intake? Comfort good?

9500 might be my next helmet!

That looks like it might be just what I need! Thanks! Do they move around? In that I mean will they slide around, or are they tight fitting...and if I wear it, will it negate the ventilation aspect of the helmet?

I don't wear one, but it worked for a lot of my old customers as well as some of my teammates. They don't generally slide around and are thin enough that you still feel any air movement. If you sweat a lot, you're going to sweat no matter what helmet you wear.

How do they work? Do they absorb the sweat and keep it from running down your face like a bandana? Or do they only wick away the sweat, and can they wick away alot of sweat?....cause I sweat like niagra falls.

The only way to know if it would work for you is to buy one. While the WSI one may be hard to find, I'm sure someone locally has the UA version.
