McGuire's coaching bio is well-documented on the web (at both TSN and NBC), but I can find very little info. about his playing career. His bio claims that he played professional hockey in Europe, but gives no other details.

I cannot find him on hockey db. Does anyone know where he was born/grew up, and where he played youth/hs/prep/junior/college before being a pro in Europe? Also where, when, and in what league did he play pro?

I guess no one cares--based on the replies (or lack thereof). There's suspiciously little info. regarding his life before coaching as an assistant at Hobart at age 23, other than the vague reference to being a pro in Europe--no schools, leagues, teams, etc. are mentioned.

I have since determined that he was born in Englewood, NJ in 1961 (from Wikipedia). I do not know whether he grew up in the US or in Canada.

Does not really matter--just curious . . . .

He went to Hobart where he played hockey. It is a strange omission in his bio, since he started coaching there, which is included in his bio. I guess he thinks it sounds better to a former European pro of a single season or less.

"Olzcyk's NBC colleague Pierre McGuire already is fired up. Of course, McGuire has a personal connection as he was born in Englewood, N.J., grew up in both Quebec and in North Jersey and attended Bergen Catholic High School."

"This article features Pierre McGuire, a member of the Hobart Class of 1983 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges."

"After playing hockey and football in college, Pierre sought out a career as a professional hockey player. After a stint in Europe, he was signed by The New Jersey Devils. However, it appeared that Pierre was destined to spend a long time in the team’s farm system in the American Hockey League, with a minimal chance of making it back to The Devils. The NHL only had 21 teams in 1984, and competition for a roster spot was fierce. A career in the minor leagues was not the objective of a young man who had been raised in a success-oriented environment. After consulting with his former college coach, Pierre decided that he could make a good career in coaching."
