Graf Cobra 5000 NT Lite Holder

Recommended Posts

hey guys any help/clarification you could provide would be great...

i bought ultra g3's in january and have been skating on them at least three times a week. after games and practices i follow grafs recommended drying/storing instructions but have lately (late march/april) have noticed little patches of rust forming on the sides of the steel.

my question is that doesnt graf use stainless steel (which shouldnt rust)? in H.S. i had bauer classics that were made stainless steel and i didnt take care of them nearly as well as i do with my grafs but i never had the slightest hint of rust on them....

im not incredibly worried about it but i just feel that the stock steel on my skates isnt up to par with what ive come to expect from graf cnd and was wondering is anyone else encountered rusting issues on theirgrafs?

Are you allowing your skates to dry in a damp area?

immediately after unlacing i remove the footbeds and keep them unlaced so i can pull the tounge out and allow the liner to fully dry....as for the steel i use my soakers to remove any visible water. afterwards i put them in my bag's skate pockets with the zipper left open and take the 30 minute drive home (theyre stuck in my hot trunk for that time). when im home they hang out in my A/C and dehumidified house, but could that 30 minute trip cause the damage?

Stainless doesn't mean that it will never rust, simply that it will do so less. That said, Graf is the worst in the industry for rusting problems. Use a honing stone and the rust should come off pretty easily.

Some people get tied up in a brand name but we try to focus solely on the quality of the product. This has made for some uncomfortable meetings at trade shows over the years but our hope is that brutal honesty is the best way to help the manufacturers improve their product.

If Graf came out with a product that blew away everyone, I would be happy to talk it up. In fact, I do really like the new Ultra G series. I don't like the liner, but the rest of the skate is nice.

Yes, just because Grafs are considered one of the best quality skates on the market doesn't mean there won't be some issues with them. They had some problems with their new outsoles on the G series delaminating and breaking down when they launched that series of skates. It was rectified by Graf fairly quickly when they found a bad batch of materials used to produce the skate. Rust on the skate blade is usually a very minor issue and won't contribute to any structural failure of the blade itself. I've heard some guys put a very light coat of petroleum jelly on their blades to minimize the problem and it seems to work well.

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the liner?

It's definitely 'strange'. I have a new pair of Ultra G70's and the liner is an odd type of nylon mesh. Very much like the materials used for mesh gussets on gloves. It does seem to dry very quickly and it's not uncomfortable, but it just feels weird.

The skates are very well made, I'm not sure if I like the lower cut of the ankle since I'm used to a lot of support up there, but my skates are very well made I have to say. They are plenty deep though, I think they're the only skates I've used that were deeper than my 8090's.

The new tongue is crazy though, it's quite literally impossible to get lace bite from it. I wrenched the laces as hard as I possibly could (just to try it) and still didn't get any. And there's no plastic inserts or hard foam at all in the tongue....

When I picked up the box for the skates when they arrived I thought I got ripped off because it was so light I thought they only packed one skate. The ultra G's are VERY light. I weighed them and they were only like 20g heavier than my 8090s (I just had to see since they were so light).

Still not sure if I'll keep them or not, I was on the fence between them and the 120xp...
