HNIC to possibly change Theme song..?

Recommended Posts

I heard on the radio today that Hockey Night In Canada might change the theme song from the one that they have been using since the begining of time... it wouldnt be the same, would it?

I heard about it too, and am currently watchin Prime Time Sports talk about it. It's legal mumbo jumbo, they have not renewed the right agreement or whatever, I think it would be strange but it wouldnt be the end of the world.

Now they're saying they're going to hold a nationwide contest for someone to make up a new theme song for a Prize if they dont renew it.

They got to be able to get that back...what value does it have to the composer if she doesn't sell it to HNIC, I mean who else is going to buy that?

remember what a big deal it was when Ron MacLean wasn't re-signed by CBC? They got him back pretty quick.

I can't see CBC just abandoning this song after almost 40 years of having it.

It's like Tim Horton's saying you must order 2 cream 2 sugar, and you may not say Double Double.

I think it'll be back. Enough fans will cause a stink about it.

Update:

Now, as I read on a Media related forum...wouldn't it be cool if TSN bought the song for the theme of it's Wednesday Night Hockey.

They've got Dave Hodge and Chris Cuthburt from CBC...(Hodge, albeit, not directly from...) the song would be a good addition, IMHO.

I heard that they may have a competition for the next best song and the winner would get $100,000... now wouldnt it make sense to maybe just keep the hundred grand and use that money to pay for the song?

Well, if it makes any difference, Steven Colbert of the Colbert Report has adopted rights to the theme song haha.

Actually the company that owns TSN bought the song.

It was massive news in Canada, especially around Toronto.

Typical of the CBC to completely drop the ball. Whenever you have a government run television channel you just know it's going to be run by idiots.

As much as I would have liked to have seen HNIC keep the song....I feel better that a Private broadcast company paid big bucks for it. I'd like to think the Government has better things to do with "our money" than buy the rights to a song.

I'll just confirm for anyone who's still wondering... CTV bought the Hockey Night in Canada theme song. It will now be used on Wednesday night hockey on TSN.

I heard that the writer of the song, wanted around $2.5 - 3 million to buy the song outright. To me, "outright" would indicate they wouldn't have to pay the $500 each time they play it.

The CTV Group will also use it on RDS and during Olympic Hockey coverage in 2010 on CTV.

They bought it "in perpetuity" (ie: forever)...so it is theirs to use as they see fit for as long as they want to.

That's a fair point....if you overlook the fact that the CBC also uses 'our money' to produce gems such as 'DaVinci's Inquest' and 'Sophie'. Seriously, who watches that crap?

Those shows are also produced to meet "CanCon" regulations set on Canadian broadcasters by the CRTC. And, they aren't always wholely paid for by Gov't money. It's usually partial grants from governments or agencies of the Gov't (FACTOR etc...) that make those shows possible.

In any case, the shows tend to be much better than anything that the American PBS system comes up with.

The Canadian Government is partially paying for Trailer Park Boys too...

Which is hilarious...but besides HNIC in Canada, what do you regularly watch on the CBC? For me and pretty much everybody I know the answer is 'nothing'. Olympics every 4 years maybe?

There is something about HNIC that is part of being a Canadian, it just seems stupid to me that they couldn't drop a couple million bucks to keep the theme song that has been around for 40 years. And now they're having a reality tv style contest to pick a new song? Dumb. Just dumb.

Not for long. :P

CBC sucks big time. With the new TV deal, TSN is starting to take over hockey broadcasting in Canada. Hopefully in the near future they will take over Saturday nights.

I thought they'd do the same thing, good to see that its still what it was. Will be weird hearing it on TSN though, not to mention the new CBC song whatever it ends up being.
