New Shinguards

Recommended Posts

I just recently purchased some 14" RBK 5K shinguards but they were way to bulky and didn't fit inside my skate (I wear the shinguard tucked behind the tongue). So, I am looking for some advice on some shinguards that are not to bulky and can be worn inside the skate. I currently have some really old cheap Bauers that I have been using for years. I do have semi large calves so I am hoping to find a shinguard that isn't too narrow that will fit. I am about 5'5 and my current Bauers are 14". Any recommendations on what I should get? Unfortunately there is not a LHS nearby where I could try some on.

Shinguards can be a bit tricky without trying them on (as most equipment in my opinion), so for a really good fit be ready to buy, send it back and buy agian. Take a look at the NBH One90 series. At the bottom they shrink down or thin out specificly for the skate tongue. Take a look at those or look for others that thin out at the bottom. Another thing, you may want to go down a size. I'm 5"11 and I wear a 15" but I also wear my shins on top of the skate, if I'd go tongues out I'd go down to a 14" for sure. For you being 5'5 13" wouldn't sound like a bad idea. Again the best would be to go to a store and try out 4 or 5 and come to a desicion.

I don't know where you're located, but there definitly has to be atleast one hockey shop within a two hour drive of you. I suggest find the best one and make a day of it. Drive out there in the morning with a friend or something, hit up the store, check out the town, hit up a bar, meet some locals and drive home. I drove four hours to boston just to go to pure hockey with a buddy of mine. We went to pure hockey, hung out in Boston went to a Red Sox game, met some cool people, had a great weekend trip and at the end of the day that whole trip came out of me wanting to go to a hockey shop. I think I'll make the 8 hour drive to toronto when I need more equipment.

5'5" and using 14"? I'm 5'9" and use 14" shin pads. I wear my fuel 110s over the tongue and the 14s give me perfect coverage. If I was going to try inside the tongue, I would recommend dropping down to a 13"

Thanks guys. I will try dropping down to a 13". One of the reasons I went with a 14" was because 13" would be a junior size and I needed the width of a senior shinguard.

Take your ATK (ankle to knee) measurement or get some other method of measuring so we can more accurately determine what you might want to go with.

I'm 6' and I wear 15" shins tucked behind the tongues. I have a 30" inseam, roughly 11-12" above the knee (known from shorts).

Anyone here have the supreme 50's that can comment on them? I am interested in seeing how big or small the calf wrap might be.

Just recently bought Supreme 30's. Im 6'0 and wear 15" shins inside the tongue. The 30's are light mobile and protect well. While the calf wrap doesnt provide 100% coverage of your calf, it covers a good 80% of it.
