Preventing Grip Dr slippage on composite stick shafts...

Recommended Posts

I purchased two Grip Dr stick grips last week for use on my two composite sticks, so far they seem great. The only issue I'm experiencing is when I take a slap shot the grip start to slip or roll slightly off the end of my stick shaft, which isn't a huge issue but is a bit of a faff trying to work the grip back down the stick shaft and its not something I'd want to have to do during a game. Has anyone come up with a way to prevent slippage for these kind of rubber grips?

All I can think of is applying some glue between the shaft and the grip to prevent slippage but I'm unsure of what type of glue to use that won't damage the composite shaft. I guess something like PVA glue should be a fairly safe bet for being inert enough to not damage the composite shaft, I don't think I'd want to try superglue or a solvent based glue in case it damaged the stick shaft....

Cheers!

PS: The sticks in question are a Bauer One70 and a Bauer Velocity Shift.

A two part epoxy should work without any problems. The soft foam from Oggie has an adhesive that doesn't slip at all. I just throw a single layer of tape over it and my biggest problem is getting it off when I want to replace the foam.

Did the grip come with a double-sided tape like the Tacki-Mac's do? Not sure if you're familiar but there is a double-sided strip of tape that fits between the shaft and the inside of the grip. you apply the tape to the shaft, a use a soapy water as a lubricant to slide the grip over the end of the shaft then you let the stick sit and dry for a few days. (that was my mistake, i used it way too quickly, and the grip got yanked off on a slapshot)

My suggestion would be use either double-sided tape (but you will likely need a lubricant to help slide the grip on), or a glue. the only concern I would have with the glue is that it may be stronger in some spots than others, or create a bulky feeling under the grip.

Where can you get these? They dont have a cart on the site. Or I havent had enough coffee yet. My bad. Right in front of my face. Not enough coffee.

Why NO BUTT END on these? Or even the option?

It's a little disappointing that they don't sell them individually, but I see how that would be hard for a company to start that way. Since I don't want a case or even 20 of these, I guess I'll just have to try to find a retailer near me.

And is the texture more rubbery like Tacki-mac or foam like Oggie?

The Grip Dr grips cover the end of the stick so if you have a but end then it will help keep it in too, I'll try the double sided tape and see how I do. I was originally looking for the Tacki-Mate grips but this was all my local rink store had so I thought I'd try them!

Just removed and reapplied the grips with some double sided tape underneath. I don't have a any skating till Thursday, due to the long Canada day weekend, I'll try to remember to report back after my next skate to say how well the tape solution works.

Have a box of them - nothing seems to keep them from sliding. Lose them on faceoffs and the occasional shot - very embarassing. I feel they're made a bit on the large side and a ton of tape would work, but as they're on the heavy-side to start with, it would make my sticks too unbalanced.

Just played this morning, double sided scotch tape up each side of the stick under the grip seems to have done the trick I noticed zero slippage of the grip even when taking slap shots.
