Gear Hockey Equipment

Recommended Posts

I saw on HG that they have some new equipment from Gear. I am particularly interested in the hockey stick they have. I am looking for a decent low price backup stick. Does anyone know if their has been any previous sticks from GEAR or if this new one would be worth looking in to?

They used to have a stick called the Hornet which a couple of kids that I used to play with used. From what I heard they didnt have a problem with them but again that was U14 roller hockey.

I got a couple Hornets when they had a buy one for $30 get one free sale at HG. Dunno if Gear has improved any since then but the Hornet's sucked for ice. The blade & hosel were very thin. I think they were intended for roller. First one snapped first time out. The other was left on the bench as a back up for awhile & now I use it for stick handling prac at the house.

You'd be better off looking around for a higher end stick but maybe an older model in that price range. Pro stock sticks can be found pretty cheap but they don't come with a warranty.

stick must be good if there offering this: * We're so confident that you'll love this new Gear product that we're making an offer unheard of in the hockey equipment industry. Try it for 30 days, and if you're not completely satisfied with the performance of this product, return it to us and we will fully credit the original purchase price (excluding shipping), no questions asked!

and if it not good there going to have a shitload of used hockey sticks so i think you should try it anyways you got nothing to lose other then shipping fees.

The Gear brand stick is made for HG by sherwood (at least when I was there). The jr version of that stick was great for kids. It was inexpensive and very light. I've seen pretty mixed results in the sr version. I think it is only available in the 100 flex (that may have changed now) and they are not very durable. You'd be better off putting your money into a better quality stick from last year's catalog.

If you do choose to go the Gear route, HG is very good about replacing them within the 30 days. Its pretty much no questions asked, it doesn't even have to be broken. If you don't like it, you don't have to keep it.

I gear hornet was the first ops I ever bought, and it remains the worst stick I have ever used. It's really heavy, never felt like flexed correctly, and had no feel. The one I bought was also insanely long. I'm 6'1", and I swear the butt end came up above my eyes, this probably affected my flex issue. Like jeffw said, the shaft is really thin. It's the width of a tapered shaft all the way up, which can make holding it feel weird (but this is a bonus if you like smaller shafts).

Even for a price point stick, this thing was a real bummer for me. I've always thought that the mission sticks in the $60-$80 price range were the best value.

Hockey Giant had the Fury Diamondbacks on sale for $50 not that long ago. Probably not bad for the cash (I have one, actually, and while it's not tapered and the blade is not as stiff as an Easton ST but for the cash definetely serviceable).
