Cobra 5000 vs 3000

Recommended Posts

I did a search but I could not find out whether the holders and steel are interchangable with each other or not.

I have a Cobra 3000 set up and my friend is offering me a set of Ultra 5000 holder and steel.

Can I swap them in and out ? I think I read in one posting where someone said the bolt is different ?

Thanks for help.

Wish I could help but I'm not sure. Try an authorized Graf dealer or maybe go to the Graf web site and you might find what your looking for.( www.grafcanada.com)

Thanks J.R. I should have recommended you to fastmiele first. Forgot how knowledgeable you are are about skates. My apologies.

It's the same holder/steel, the mounting screws/runner screw is different.

Okay, that's great. Thanks JR.

If the holder and steel is the same how is the Ultra 5000 supposed to be lighter than the 3000 ?

I know about JR's knowledge and expertise but we can't bug him everytime we have a question. The guy will never get a chance to do anything for himself. I try to ask him only when I am a bit desperate for help. I was hoping other members here might know. Its all about members helping/sharing knowledge with each other. Kind of like you got a hockey team practicing, once the session is over most of the players bolts for the dressing room and only one or two skaters go retrieve all the pucks. If each skater just retrived one or two pucks and put it back in the pail it would be alot easier. Same goes with the water bottles.

The formula for the plastic is supposed to be different as well.

I am going to try and put a layer of multipurpose grease over the screw/bolt to see if it helps prevent rusting.

The only concern I have now is it bad to use a slightly smaller size screw driver to take out the bolt ? I can tell that my screw driver is not as thick as it should be but if I put enough torque into it the bolt will loosen. I am worried that I might damage the face of the bolt.

Do many people use improper tools for removal ? I know that when I went into my LHS to replace a broken runner that the worker used any old screw driver and turned it open.

Okay, I removed both of the steel runners from the holders. The left side bolt and screw were decent but the right side was pretty rusted up.

I guess it kind of makes sense because I stop on my right side.

I cleaned everything up and put thick automotive grease into both of the bolts and then screwed everything back in. I think snow/water seeps through the steel and holder and travels upwards into the bolt inside the holder. Hopefully the thick automotive grease will act as a barrier and repel snow and water. I don't want to constantly open things up and do maintenance because my screw driver is not the right size and I am making a little bit of force impression on the face of the bolt from turning/torque it.

Screwdriver will work just fine.

I honestly don't have a clue (my knowledge of chemistry is limited largely to "don't put permanganate on your crotch") but I do recall seeing identifiers like those describing a specific kind of Zytel on a Bauer or Mission product page at one point. Maybe on HG.

edit: It was Mission... "Zytel ST801 - toughest grade Dupont Nylon available"
