How To: Dye Your Holders

Recommended Posts

not sure if this is on topic, but has anybody purchased the custom colored tuuks or any other holders from TOTALHOCKEY.net i did a search and only came up with the fact that its basically the same process of using RIT dye. Anybody have actually pictures? curious to see what they actually look like.

Thought i'd ask.

I ordered em way back when...before I wised up and did it myself. They use the same RIT dye procedure. Do it yourself for $5...Funny, now that after many complained to them about their misleading advertising practices, they have a little disclaimer on their website saying basically that the dye job is just a surface treatment...not dyed the whole way through.

If you ordered them, would you happen to have an actual picture? From the pics on totalhockey they look really bright and sharp. But i'm skeptical that a dye job can do that. If you have pics can you post them. If not, i guess i'll just wait. Or try dying them myself. Thanks in advance.

Turns out identical...PM me and I'll send you some pics.

alright, ive got a couple questions about this whole process, after reading the whole thread:

1) will 306 tuuk ls2's fit on a pair of graf 705's like the original cobra's?

2) will the ls2 holders shrink up?

3) can you dye holders with the steel still in them?

4) how long should you leave the holders in for a red color?

thanks

1. Not sure depends what size the 705's are. I always go up a size from stock with no problems (stock on mine should be 280. I use 288's)

2. Yes they will, so...

3. keep the steel in them

4. Depends how dark you want the red...20 minutes should give you candy apple red..any longer than that, it'll be darker.

so leaving the runners in the holder will cause no problems, correct?

Take the bolts and the nuts out (rust). Leave just the steel in. I've done about 20 pairs, no problems.

20 pairs? is there that big of a demand? an entire college team with red holders would look awesome, now that i think about it

I do it as a favor for friends...

LHS here in MN are getting on the bandwagon...seen anywhere from $30 to $70 to dye a pair. Spend $5 and do it yourself!

My Graf 735's ... I used non RIT brand multi-purpose powder (small little round capsle - fabricland). I left it in a bucket for 24hrs.

It seemed to work out well although one holder didnt hold the dye on the words while the other did. So one skate says Graf Cobra NT-3000 in orange while the other is completely black.

Hate to ask a dumb question but here I go. Does anyone know what I should mix to make a baby blue like the thrashers/penguins? Unfortunately my local Walgreens, Target & Wal-Mart don't have the baby blue dye (does it even exist)

I would honestly think a somewhat dark blue with white but that might yield to light of a color I would wait to hear some other opinions. I couldn't find baby blue RIT dye online for you.

I don't think they make white dye. The reason being is that the Rit dye is designed for fabrics. Most T---shirts that are being dyed START as white.

Anyway, use the lightest blue color dye you can find, and just leave the holders in for a short amount of time, making sure to monitor them often. The less the holder is in the dye mixture, the lighter the color will be.

Actually, they do. It's called bleach.

White dye cannot exist as a dye because dye can only make things darker. It adds pigment to something, and to get white you have to take away any colors already there.

For a powder blue, I would go with a regular blue dipped for a short time.

I cant find how these hold up after time... any chipping etc??

They will chip...get a bottle of automotive touch up (looks like a nail polish container), it has a little brush for an applicator. All the colors of the rainbow available. I use Scratch n Fix from Checker or O'Reilly auto parts.

Okay so I'm dying a pair of tuuks for a friend. I put 2 black and 1 brown in and they are coming out purple still. Did I do something wrong? I'm going to leave them in til morning to see what happens but if that doesnt work should i redo the whole process again? I'd rather not give my friend purple tuuks <_<

EDIT: Upon further investigation they are jet black the purple was the wet dye reflecting in the light.

I'm bored and I'm thinking about dyeing my Cobra 3000's black.

Early on in this thread it was mentioned that this is one of the softer holders out there and the dye would weaken it further. I haven't seen any follow-ups, though.

To anyone who has dyed Cobras, how are they holding up?

Can I expect a noticeable difference after dyeing?

If I wreck the Cobras, are there any other holders that line up should I have to replace (4 holes on the front, 4 on the back)?

Should I just leave them alone?
