How quickly do you think a 9 or 10 year old would outgrow one of the custom molded mouthguards. While not required for my son right now I want him to wear a mouthguard and he frequently is chewing on it instead of wearing it properly. I was thinking if it fit him better he would keep it in more. I don't mind the $50 if it works but want him to get a season out of it anyway.

I received my Pro-Tekt mouthguard about 3 months ago and have been nothing but happy with its performance. While it is thicker than a standard boil and bite guard that is due to the multiple layer model that I purchased, their single layer model is as thin or thinner than a boil and bite product. As for the fit, my fits perfectly. It feels like it snaps on to my teeth and doesn't move. I literally can't get it off my teeth without grabbing the front and back of the thing and yanking it off. Sorry to hear that you've had problems with the fit, I would be willing to bet that something went wrong with the mold. I hope the company will find a way to get you a satisfactory product. Please keep us updated.

did you get Bioguard I, II or III?

Myself thinking of getting Safeguard, since I wear a cage.

I got the Bioguard II - I think the Safeguard would be a bit thinner.

I ordered the Bioguard II single color model. I guess I wouldn't mind the extra bulk over the single layer Safeguard but only if it fit in nice and tight like shooter27. Last night I put in both the Bioguard and then my boil and bite and I stuck with the thinner boil and bite since it just felt a lot better.

I sent an email to their customer service yesterday but this morning my Hotmail acct sent a delivery notice back that it was being delayed. I don't know what's up with that but I'll wait a bit.

Thanks for the offer Icedog but I think the issue is probably that the mold didn't work that well for me so even if i sent it to Gladiator I can't imagine the end result being any better. And anyway I don't have a mold anymore, just the actual mouthguard that Protekt sent back.

Diehard fan, for the cost of the Safeguard model ($35 US) I don't know if I'd bother with that and just try one of the better off the shelf models first. Or go the dentist route like some other guys have sworn by.

you should get a season out of it, but even a custom guard will get destroyed by a chewer, we offer an up grade we call the Raptor that is $6 more than the Pro that is much more difficult to deform through chewing. You will have to call that order in though. The guard should fit tight enough that he will have to take it out with his hands you can't just spit out a custom guard

UPDATE - resent my email to Protekt today which I think never got through the first time. I got a reply back fairly quick today and they're sending out a new mold and gave some more tips about how to do a proper mold. I'm hoping this time it all works out good and will update again in a few weeks when I get back the next version.

Did you get back the new piece and how did it work out for you? I'm still deciding between the Safeguard and Bioguard. I feel the Bioguard will be too bulky, but the Safeguard will be thin but not provide adequate protection.

I went last season without a mouthguard, and being a smaller guy, I usually end up on the ice on collisions not to mention guys gunning for me, and luckily have gone unscathed *knock on wood*.

I just bought the latest shock doctor DNA mouth guard, and it feels like its painted on, i couldn't be happier.

The DNA is a great product, feels very nice in your mouth for a quick "buy and boil" mouth guard. However, if you are looking for the absolute best fitting and best performing mouth guard you need to take a quick trip to your dentist and they will make one for you, usually takes a few days to receive it nothing too long though.

which one?

http://www.shockdoctor.com/products/mouthguards.aspx

Yeah, the power gel DNA.

it is by far the best mouth guard i have ever used, although i cannot speak about custom fit ones, seeing as i have never had one made.

there's been a lot of positive reviews for DNA gel so I bought one - dammit - the thing is plain uncomfortable

is it supposed to be bolied or something (seems like it based on some recent comments) - I threw the instructions out :(

so how do I do it?

I've never had any luck w/shockdoctor mouthguards. Between them and the old boil and bites I just toughed it out until this past winter league. After taking an elbow to the jaw during open hockey (long story) I caved in and bought a gladiator. There is no comparison between custom and off the rack. It worked in my favor that they're located close to me as it took less than a week to get mine by mail.

Absolutely love it. I do wear a full cage though.

That's odd, I never had a problem with that. Maybe it has to do with mouth or tooth shape. I know when I had a crown put it I had to re-boil my mouthguard, but otherwise it's a lot easier to talk and breathe with it on. I don't know how much they do or don't protect in terms of a concussion, but I think between the Gravity and a full cage I'm pretty well protected.

I got a custom fit mouthguard because my dental insurance quoted me that they covered 80% over the phone. When the dentist submitted the bill, I found out they covered 0% for that mouth guard but 80% for the one made to prevent grinding teeth. I was a bit pissed that I had to fork out a little over $100 for a mouthguard. After having worn it for a session and a half, I couldn't be happier. I just wish I would have done it sooner. I play inline with guys that use other guys and the wall for brakes and get away with flagrant high sticks and the like because they are clumsy. It's saved me a few smacks to the mouth and I'm sure a light concussion after going into the corner for a loose puck to be run by some clown that couldn't stop. Long story short, pay for the protection. Just like a helmet, it is worth the money. Getting your teeth fixed when you are older will cost you a lot more if you don't take care of them now.

I also got a custom mouthguard made by Pro-Tekt, http://www.protektmouthguards.com/. Couldn't be happier. I do not even notice it when I play. It only cost me $35 Canadian, totally worth it. I am honestly thinking about getting another one as a backup.

I got Safeguard because I wear a cage, I wear it mainly to prevent concussions as there are few newbie and hot shots in the league.

Yeah same with me, i thought it would be covered but it wasn't. In the end i was still very happy with it and its worth the money. I think mine was less then $100cad so for a decent retail one you are paying $30-40cad?

Worth the extra money if you are serious about your teeth, best fitment and protection against concussions.

+1 I have tried several types of traditional boil and bite and I can't stand any of them. The gravity is much smaller and I don't even notice when I have it in. It would be pretty worthless without a cage, but I wear one and love it. I never stop talking on the ice and the gravity doesn't affect breathing or talking. I guess this is pp, but I can't imagine gagging on this one compared to the upper tooth ones.

Well i got a proform mouth guard custom made at my local dentist. Cost me $60 CDN. I had attempted to wear the boil and bite type of guard in the past but they are just plain horrible! The custom guard is terrific! I can breathe, talk, and drink with it in. It's very comfortable almost like i'm not even wearing a guard. It is the type that covers the upper teeth. I wear a mission bucket with an hs22 prowave visor.

Today during my beer league game, i got a reminder of why i need to wear this thing. Taking the face off, the puck rocketed up and clipped me on the cheek. If that had hit me in the mouth without my guard, i'd probably be at an emergency dentist rather than sitting here comfortably on the couch browsing my favorite forum!

Wear those mouth guards people!
