I wouldn't be suprised if a bird or form of FOD (foreign Object Debris) struck the engine causing a fan blade to break off and severley damage the rest of the jet engine and the ensuing explosion could have ripped through the planes hydrolic lines... though the engines are located on the rear of the MD-82 and not really leading edges I thinks its still a good possibility...

such a shame :(

Ever been to the old Hong Kong airport? Now that was insane...you were like 50 feet away from highrise buildings after taking a sharp turn, then you were forced to land quickly and stop quickly too or you'd fly out in the water.

LGA has a crazy approach, and short runways.

Reagan National has some really tricky approaches, LGA isn't that bad in comparison. And if you go too far off course you get a missile up your ass.

Nope, it's a real approach. The jet blast throws people back into the water.

Here's a YT vid.

:o HOLY SHIT!!!!! My buddies parents lived in St. Maarten for 2 or 3 years, and he never mentioned that.

Back when I worked for a cargo airline a lot of pilots had told me about SXM's approach as well as Tegucigalpa. You bank along the mountains and drop it in there.

Craziest thing I ever saw was driving along one of MIA's runways, I saw a 757 approaching 90 degrees to the runway, hard bank and dropped it in there. There was a huge rainstorm along the regular approach. Insane.
