Getting Stiffer Flex Question

Recommended Posts

Im looking to buy a closeout one90 stick, but the site im buying from only has the curve i want in a 77 flex. If i cut this down 2 inches to make it an 84 flex, then put a wood plug in the end to get the length back, would it still be an 82 flex or would it retain its 77 flex?

If i take mostly wrist shots is the whippier flex better for me anyway?

Well, I just put an Oggie grip in a shaft and it made it quite a bit whippier, so I'd imagine the inverse would hold true, and the wood end would make the shaft stiffer. I don't know if a couple inches would make much of a difference though.

Depending on your weight, height, and strength, the whippier shaft could help you or it could not. If possible, I'd try a teammate's stick out first that has that flex and length first.

Im about 5'8 and around 200 pounds if that helps...

A 77 might be slightly too whippy if you intend to put a wood extension etc into it. 87 should suit you best. Look on ebay to find the flex you want at a closeout price.

Well, unless you like your sticks short. I'm 5'8" and I have to cut off a few inches from a senior stick. So if I did get a 75 flex stick, it would be closer to 85 when all is said and done. But the One90 has a higher kickpoint, so maybe it will feel a bit stiffer for you.

If the deal is too good to pass up, buy it, and try it out. If you don't like it, you can probably re-sell it here for about what you paid, or take a slight hit. If you know 77 flex is going to be too whippy for you, then I'd wait until you find the right stick.

try keeping the stick at your normal length, then put a butt end in, and cut it flush with the end of the stick. (so just the thin part of the butt end is in the shaft, nothing above that)

can be annoying to remove but no biggie - put a screw 2/3rds into the end, heat up like normal, and pull out with pliers

no idea how effective that'll be but for $3, why not.

if you cut it down and put in a wooden butt end, it will be more flexible than what you cut it down to, but less flexible than what started at, probably something like an 80 or so. just leave it at what its at then

Rather than tell you what to do, I'll answer your questions and let you decide.

If you cut it down, then put a plug in you will be somewhere between 77 and 84. Most likely it will be in the 80ish range. There's no way for us to tell for sure if the whippier stick would be better for you. I firmly believe that most people use sticks that are too stiff but I have no way of knowing if you are in the majority or not.

I think you make a good point but isn't it also true that sticks that are a little stiffer are better for stick handling? I personally think it's an inevitable trade off, but maybe I'm missing something...

I always found the one90 to be really whippy. I used an 87 cut down to what it says is 96, and found the stick unbelievably whippier than my 75flex sickick or 77 XXXX. I can't imagine what a 77 one90 would be like.

You can't make a blanket statement, according to what Joe Casasanta has discovered with his TruFlex machine. He's found so much range in the flex of wooden butt ends -- from the 80's to 140's -- that he refers to it as being at the mercy of the tree.

If you start with a 100 flex and get down to a 50 or 60 flex you would have to adapt the way you stickhandle. Short of that, there really isn't a major change. It also depends on you, a stiffer stick will allow you to get away with jerky movements better than a whippier one. Neither one is "better" just what you're more used to using.

Another possibility is grabbing a composite butt end from an old Synergy SL stick. A lot of LHS's have some sitting around. They're about 3" long. They do feel a hair more flexible than most wood ends I've used though, and much lighter.

As for the flex, I seem to shoot better when I use a stick that's a bit stiffer than I think I'd like. I prefer 70 flex (cut down to about 75), but then I use an 80 flex (cut down to about 85) and my shots are harder and more accurate. So either I need something in the middle, or I'm trying too hard to flex it when I shoot (or both). I know stickhandling with a whippy stick often seems to lose some feel for me and it can be harder to catch passes if the stick actually flexes when you're catching them.
