Rivetting

Recommended Posts

I had a customer that has a witness that he did a complete change over of a set of tuuks, including copper rivetts. It has been so long since I have done a pair myself, however it seemed like a very impressive time.

What was the Time? Depending on the rivets, if they're clean and straight, and had everything including all the right sizes for each hole, could do a pair in about 10-15 minutes tops. with "Laces OUT DAN!" of course.

Haha...

I had someone time me a couple of times. Dismount/remount took 4.5 min. Manual riveter - didn't shank one rivet.

I like a challenge though, I should actually try to speed-rivet and video it.

Find an old junked pair of skates and practice. A couple other things off the top of my head:

1. Don't use rivets that are too long

2. Don't jerk the handle, pull down smoothly

3. Don't be afraid to screw up, you will, we all have

4. Treat every pair of skates you work on as if they were your own

Brandon (Lb33Knight) is pretty damn fast. Drilled and mounted my skates in 20 minutes. He was cheating with the pnuematic riveter though :P (I know its really not any faster)

It really does take a lot of practice. It is like sex for the first time, you can't really see what you are doing and you have to line up a peace that has a prick on it to another that has a hole in it. The trick is that it is all done by visualizing what you are doing because you can't see what is going on in the boot. It is fun to watch someone who has never riveted before.

JR you are such a stud.

And to think that people cheat by using too big of a rivet just screams penis envy to me.

i learned by taking an old onesie skate that lost its partner and just took it apart and put it back together like 30 times probally, taking off nbh coppers suck big dick, the ccm rbk ones are pretty easy. with coppers i never really ever figured the "right" way but how jr showed me was to take a mini flathead, hammer it under the washer and bend it up, then pry it up with needle nose pliars which works well. id just suggest to take your time, care about every skate your going to do, and listen to any tips jr gives you and anyone else on here. no one is perfect, you will drill holes angeled, you will miss rivets, its all part of it, but with practice it gets pretty easy.

Sometimes with the fat Nike China and Mission rivets, you're better off using a hacksaw and cutting flush to the washer, then one blow takes them off. Dremel isn't a good idea as you will heat up the rivet and it will sink into the insole and/or holder.

God I still can't rivet. I've been trying for about 3 months, I can't line up the rivet on the machine. I must've gone through a draw of rivets. Needless to say the boss wasn't happy about that but I paid him for a new draw.

Coppers are obviously easy - here is what you do with steel - put your thumb on the the head of the rivet and slide it over the pin. You have to either visualize like Steve said. You know what the pin looks like...move it around til you feel it go up around the point and when it clicks in. When it clicks in you will feel the rivet raise up. Right there you know that you have it on the point. If you need further confirmation, make sure the pocket lines up correctly with the rivet before you press it.

Not a bad idea about vegas. Will anybody be there?

9:30.00 to do a complete change over on a tuuk holder, including repacing the runner and two copper rivets. No shanking of the rivets either. Manual Rivet machine too. Not bad for being self taught. Just waiting on the the call to the show. Right Steve B)

I'd be plenty fast if the damn pin didn't always get stuck in the hole of the skate after popping out the old rivets, How do you guys keep the piece in place in the machine?

There should be a very small allen screw near the bottom of the pin to hold it in the press.

...or your rivet removal pin is too worn out. What may be happening is that it is worn out to the part where it flares out, which is wider than a rivet hole.
