XL Elbow Pads

Recommended Posts

I was at the LHS (2 1/2 hrs away) this past weekend and tried on a number of elbow pads, they did not have anything that fit. I have Easton Synergies (Large) and they are too small and the straps too tight (but they were cheap and my first pair, but damn those straps hurt)...I was told by the folks working there that there is no such thing as XL elbow pads.

I can't imagine my arms are bigger than the NHLers, so I would think someone makes an XL or has bigger sizing. With that in mind I searched the web this morning and could only find Rbk 9K ASD (not sure what that stands for???) and Rbk 6K Fitlite in XL. I would like to get something that is going to last and protect me but really comfort is my main concern. I play defense in a beginners league and a C league (no checking) so there are some stick flying but I'm more worried about protection when I fall (often...lol).

If these are the only two options are the 9K's worth the extra $10 or not?

What does ASD mean? What is the difference between the ASD and Fitlite?

Does anyone know of other companies that make XL elbow pads? Kinda stinks to only have two options, but better than pants where I only have one...lol

Thanks!

The ASD (Advanced System Design) is the original Jofa/RBK elbow pad. The FitLite have a different cap and is vented. Jofa elbows are #1 in the NHL - they'll be plenty protective.

I never liked the fit of the size 6 Jofa/RBK elbows, they felt too tight and bulky. I felt like my elbow was not in the pocket- but I don't know if that's the design or if my elbow is just too big.

I ended up in a large set of Bauer 2000 elbows when I got them a few years ago. I don't fit well in most size large pads, either. The current Supreme lines look similar in design, you might want to try them out.

Same here, the size 6 5044s I have feel to bulky so I'm squeezing into my size 5 5044s... which barely wrap around my arms. To put them on basically I put the elbows on where I think they should fit, then I move them up about an inch and they sit nicely.

are Jofa and RBK the same company?

I tried large Bauers (I really wanted them to match most of my other Bauer gear) but they were way to small.

I understand they don't have an XL so I was looking for a company that did...

Reebok bought Jofa, they carried over most of the designs. RBK equipment has "by Jofa" on it or "Jofa ASD".

I couldn't use a higher level Bauer elbow, I got the 2000 because it was pretty stripped down- basically a plactic cup with a bicep guard and forearm guard. I haven't looked at the current elbows they offer, they might have changed them in the last 3 years.

A bad pic, but you can see them in that shot.

I'll have to see if I can find a pair of those to try on...otherwise I guess I'll go with the 6K or 9K...any feedback on either of these elbow pads?

Just measured my arm- 13.5" forearm just in front of the elbow, 16" bicep just above the elbow unflexed. The elbows fit tight when I first got them, but after a skate or two the elastic stretched out a bit and the pads broke in to fit a ton better than off the shelf.

Reebok 9k are the top level, very commonly used in the NHL. Jofa is regarded as the best, and Reebok didn't change a whole lot, I think the 9k is a direct copy of Jofa's top model before the buy-out. The 6k (and all of the fitlite protective) are newer and focus on ventilation I think. 5k or 7k elbows might be a better choice over the 6k (if you can find them), though Europe has more selection than NA since it doesn't sell as well here.

I have the same problem, so on a hunch, I bought the biggest pair of elbow pads I could find, 12" TPS Flexors from the Hockeyworld.com closeout site. They fit pretty good, even though the forearm strap is still pretty snug and there's enough overhang on the bristly part of the velcro on the strap that it rubs my arm raw when I wear a short-sleeved shirt underneath. If you can find a pair, they're worth the money (especially considering I got mine for like $6.) They have a hard, molded elbow cap that's covered with synth leather and a hard cap on the bicep and on the forearm. The upper and lower pieces are held together with heavy nylon straps and big fat rivets, so they'll last for freakin' ever.

The RBK 9k feels a little smaller all-around than my TPS, but it's about the most protective pair you can get off the shelf.

FWIW, I'm 6-2, 235 and I guess I have forearms the size of tree trunks or something.

Is 12" considered XL?

Did you try the 9K in XL?

Thanks for the insight!!

I don't know what 12" equates to, but judging by the 9k XL vs the Flexor, I'd say XL would be a good guess. Hockeygiant's sizing guide says 15-16" is an XL, but I don't think I've seen any quite that big... I guess write the Bruins and see if you can buy some of Chara's used gear if you need something THAT big

The middle strap on the 9k was a little longer than on the TPS, but the forearm wrap of the TPS covers more of my arm. The caps on the TPS are a little more low-profile and I really like the exposed hard caps on the bicep and forearm area.

My 15" easton gloves cover the first 1" or so of the forearm area of my TPS elbows and the bicep area gets overlapped by 1.5" or so of the bicep part of my 9k shoulder pads, so the 12" is long enough that there's no gaps in normal circumstances.

I just hit up hockeyworld.com and they still have the TPS Flexors for $6 They even have them in 14" now <_< . Worth a try, and if they're still not right, you'd get your money back on ebay or something...

My problem with the Jofa elbows is that the straps are fine length-wise but the velcro is too far back..I'd move the velcro so I could get a better fit if I could. Otherwise they're too tight
