New Imacs... tonight

The new G5's may be fast, but the AMD 3500+ i'm getting is definatly faster. The newest generation of amd's are tons faster than any puny mac or pentium out. And since i'm gonna overclock my 3500+ to 3700 or 3800+, it's gonna be hella fast. Plus a 9800 xt and 1 gig of corsair ram is probally gonna cost the same as your G5. Mac's = overpriced++

Maybe, but windows 64bit is coming out sometime this year, never know they could make it not suck. I was also thinking of installing linux redhat, or partition the drives and dual boot.

They would have to rewrite the entire OS for that to happen. There's way too much bloated code in there. It's also nice to hear almost all of the major enhancements due to come out in "longhorn" have been pushed back to a later release so they can make the release deadline.

Longhorn, I was trying to remember that name. It's supposed to run 200% smoother.

Yeah, make sure you believe everything Microsoft tells you.

Soon enough, every computer will be like the G5 with advancements in Quantum Physics and Nano Technology.

huh?

Quantum Physics is the physics of things that are extremely small. For instance, (I forget exactly where this took place) China or Japan made a car that was like one of those little tiny toy cars.

Nano Technology is really really small stuff to put it simply. I was watching a show on army equipment of the future and they were using Nano Technology to put together a suit that would conform to the body, tight like Under Armor. The suit would be made by a web like string that was electronical and it would basically detect the muscle that is moving and give the user super strength. It is hard to explain, you would have to watch the show. Some really interesting stuff.

This relates to the G5 in the sense that everything is getting smaller so soon enough they will be able to have like 5 GHZ and all these buses you were talking about a lot smaller. So something the size of the G5 will be a super computer.

lol.. I know what quantum physics and nano tech is. First of all, 5ghz is a little overkill, for now atleast. And you want your front side bus and your cahce to be HIGHER.

And jake... longhorn is a joke, as was whistler (xp). Whistler was suppose to be a MUCH more secure and stable OS, look at what it gave us. Longhorn is suppose to be database based, and suppose to be groundbreaking... come on.

I'm sorry, but it isnt released yet. For all we know it could be groundbreaking. So how about we wait and see. Also, Linux redhat IMO is alot more stable than OSX.

Considering they stripped out three of the main pillars of the build in order to get it released on time, don't hold your breath.

lol... just because it isnt released dosent mean we havent used it, come on, IRC baby, im still using a beta version (the final build) of win xp on my pc (well, whenever i need it). To say redhat linux is more stable is crazy. Its just not, plus redhat isnt making a linux os nemore... so, whatchya gonna use now, win 3.1?

I'm sorry, but I just dont see a point to having a mac unless your video editing or photochopping. For any kind of multi-media application mac is untouched, but for anything else, I consider it useless. Software is limited greatly and everything is overprices. Service packs are even $125 something right? Waste of money IMO.

Software is not limited at all, you can do ANYTHING on a mac that you can do on a pc. A windows service packs increases stability, and security. Apple service packs give additional groundbreaking features. There are security updates every now and then, and they are downloaded for free. The "service packs" from apple are optional, they are just some new cool features. Name one cool feature in SP2

Honestly there isn't much difference between the two OS's in terms of what you can do while using either as your platform. Macs are much better at graphics oriented activities and PCs are much better at other development and database activities, and that's due to the wider range of software available for the PC. If you plan on gaming, you really only have one choice.

I was thinking of getting a Powerbook. I've always been a PC user but I'm so sick of Windows!!!

Anyways, I heard there's a application called Virtual PC for the Mac. It's supposed to allow you to run a Windows OS on your Mac. Has anyone used this app? Does it work well and are you able to use any PC application on your Mac? From what I have heard, you can install Windows XP on your Mac (I guess that could come in handy for the rare occassion that Windows is essential).

I used virtual PC on my old G3 from time to time. It was really SLOOOOOW but it ultimately worked in allowing me to use windows for a quick task here and there when the Mac wasn;t getting the job done. I have no idea how well it works on newer macs.

Even with the new G5's, you still wouldnt be able to run any pc program, games especially, with the speed and framerates of the pc version. I'm a gamer, and i'll sacrifice a fair bit of stability for the power I can get. I expect to run Halflife2 on a high res with very playable frame rates, and theres just no way to do that on a mac.

I have the new virtual pc, 7.0 (win xp pro). I run every pc program on my g4 powerbook at the same speed I ran it on my dell pc. Obviously, apples arent gamers computers, and I never claimed they were, they are without a dobut not. But ANY PROGRAM you run on a pc, you can run on a mac, I do it every day.

I didn't think 7.0 was released yet? In any case, people have yet to find a reason to run a Mac emulator.

I'm probably about a month or two away from just getting a new computer. Or a second that would take over "main" status. And these look like a really good option. Though I haven't used a mac since g3s. The fact it's wall-mountable is really interesting to me also.

yep, they are vesa mount compatible (a mount standard). Which is really exciting, you can mount it to a swing arm on a wall, which is just awsome, jsut mount it, and swing it around, cool stuff.

I think that's because the average PC user has no clue as to what a Mac can do. I think most PC users would be content with Outlook Express, MS Office, and Internet Explorer.
