How to safely dull your skates

Recommended Posts

If the job was really terrible, I would rather just get them re-done. So I wouldn't have any insecure thoughts on the ice.

Yeah that's what i was thinking but i have a game tomorrow night and no way to get them re done before then

After a sharpening I usually take a lap then stand with my hands on the bench boards and drag the blades on the ice hard a few times in each direction if they need it. Takes the initial "sharp" feeling out and kinda preps them until I notice them slipping too much 4-8 skates later. In a timetable; -too sharp------------good-----------too dull-, so I'm essentially taking off the first "break-in" period.

I probably need to adjust my ROH... but if it ain't broke as they say.

Ask your local proshop for extra cut off butt end pieces. Use the any clean / smooth side to rub your steel. That way you know its consistent.

Latest I heard from the Head Equipment Manager at Army was use a Scotch Brite and wipe the blades a few times. I haven't tried it myself but it sounds interesting.

Someone did a terrible job of sharpening my skates and i was wondering if i can make them dull in anyway without taking a large edge off

IF they are done properly, you shouldn't have to "dull" your skates. I use a leather pad, but you most likely feel is a rolled edge of fine steel that makes your skates feel sticky.... Too sharp.

Although I agree, if you get caught in a bind, similar to a below post about pennies...I've used nickels to get by until I could have someone I trust sharpen them.

I would think that would be bad, that's ALMOST as bad as running steel wool over the blades. If you did that you'd need to be gentle...

I'd get them resharpened, if it's your usual shop just go in there when someone else is there and explain that you just got your skates sharpened here last week and they don't feel right... They'll normally redo them for free. Nothing is going to replace a good sharpening but you also might want to look at them to see if you have a burr that can be taken out with a honing stone.

As far as dulling the edges... it works for when you're on too deep of a hollow, but really you aren't getting the full benefit of sharp skates with the right hollow. But whatever works for you. :)
