Getting checked

Recommended Posts

I did a search for this, and couldn't find anything. Please point me to the proper thread if this has already been discussed.

I hear all the time that there is a proper way to take a check, but what is it? If you were teaching someone how to get hit the proper way, what would you tell them?

Are there different ways to take a check depending on whether you are in the open ice or along the boards?

Thanks for your help.

On the boards, keep the hands at waist level and extend them about 6" from the body; kind of like cross-checking the boards. Give in as you hit them, and spring right off. That's how I was taught to take it.

the worst possible thing you could do is try to fight a hit off, if your getting hit into the boards, and you know hes coming hold your breath, and lean tight against teh boards. if its mid ice, pray for the best.

If your expecting the hit it will hurt less, so always expect to get hit, suicide passes are the worst to defend, I find it best if you just turn around and receive the pass instead of turning your head back.

Just dont cross check them in the face as they come to hit you... i can still taste blood in my mouth...

Been there done that one many times. Sucks when ppl can't take a hit and put their stick and hands up for protection.

Learning how to fake guys and avoid checks is just as important, you don't want to simply take the check everytime. You take the check when its unavoidable and/or you run the risk of injuring the other guy by attempting to evade the on coming check.

As Chadd has already said, its difficult to tell you every detail on every scenario. Get some coaching from someone that can show you good, clean ways to check and it will be well worth it.
