Canada --> US

Recommended Posts

Here is my answer -

Why would a US consumer buy something from Canada?

It's going to cost you more.

Absolutely...not to mention the fact that the customs situation can cost as much as an extra week of shipping time. Only time I buy in CA is when they have somethign I can't get in the states

Yeah but he said that he doesn't want to wait and there is always the chance that his LHS doesn't carry this particular mask. Sometimes, purchasing north of the border is cheaper but it depends on the product in question. Some companies set their pricing in Canadian dollars and the the current disparity, that would mean a US purchaser would be able to buy for less. I wouldn't think that a product like a mask would necessarily fall into that category tho.

He's still going to wait for the product to clear customs regardless. It'll take the same time for the LHS to get it from the manufacturer anyway, even less if the mask is a company with a US warehouse.

In Canada, equipment is more than the US across the board. They are not paying the same that a US retailer pays before you convert the currency.

Look at the site in question - they are selling skates, for example, $50 more than you can get it at any online US retailer.

Not sure that it would take the same amount of time to clear customs, that is a grey area that you can never be sure about. However, to be sure, there is bound to be a shipping delay due to customs. Not sure which mask he is looking to obtain so I'm not sure about the 3 week wait that a US-based retailer is quoting him. Of course, it is within reason that they are giving him a 3 week window in order to prevent any issues should their be a delay caused by customs.

Skates, masks and gear from the brand-name manufacturers are bound to cost the same whether purchased north of the border or not. Where there can be savings is from some of the smaller builders who set their pricing in Canadian dollars and have no retail presence outside of Canada, if they have any retail presence at all.

Hackva no longer sells direct so you have to order thru somebody. Have you mentioned to your LHS about the price that you can get it online? Keep in mind that I feel that you should always support your local shops or, guess what?, they won't be there.

The LHS sells it at $430 for the texalium w/ standard chrome cage. this Canadian site sells it at $380 for the same thing.

However, The LHS does not carry the gold cage. the canadain site sells it for an extra $60

To ship from Canada there is a $40 charge.

So:

LHS $430 +$?(gold cage ordered custom) +5% sales tax =?

Site $380 +$60 + $40 = $480

i did end up going to my LHS because i decided that $60 is worth 2-3 weeks. only thing is that the LHS wanted $120 for the cage so i decided to just go with the stock chrome. does anyone know where i can get a hackva gold cage the CC-whatever certified (vertical and horizontal bars) for less than $120? ive look online and they seem to not exist.

thanks

I'm a bit late posting but if it's not too late to cancel your order, Don Simmons sells to both Canadian and American customers and they have a warehouse on both sides of the boarder if I'm not mistaken which means that whatever you order from them online ships from the States if you are located in the States. Hockey galore is overpriced on everything. The cages in question can be found online if you look hard. Check Reids hackva masks at http://www.reidsgoaliemasks-hackva.com/hackva_site_6_003.htm for exemple that's in Canada and they do carry all of the other cage models. I believe that what your LHS was asking for was right though if you look at that site.

When I do your math above the LHS price on the basic mask is $430 plus tax, and the site is $420, not a huge difference. Does the shipping include Customs broker fees? Sometimes that surprise can add another $25. Like someone just said, ask your LHS to wiggle. I just sold a Eddy LT for $399, the cheapest online site is $829. Unless it's a chain store, there usually is room for haggling.
