Mats Sundin Signs

Recommended Posts

Wow- I knew he was awful good but was kindof surprised when I saw he's been a PPG player for the Laughs, I had no idea he put up those kinds of numbers.

Safe to say he'd be high on the "Best Player to Never Win A Cup" list. Assuming this season doesn't end with a Cup victory in Van City.

I'm happy with this. I like Vancouver and I think he'll fit in well with them. I didn't think he would actually sign there, but I'm much happier its there than NYR.

is there any particular reason why you think he will fit in there ?

I can only think he made his decision on the Sedin twins. I thought maybe it had to do with Luongo but who knows what is going on with his injuries.

Anyone know there cap space now? Last saturday on the hot stove Al said that there was a chance gaborik would go to the nucks in the off season to play with demitra.

Move along, nothing to see here, apparently Mats Naslund wants to make a comeback and play with Sundin during the Olympics.

At first it was because I thought they had a lot of Swedes. But in looking at the roster they only have four (Sedins, Ohlund and Edler), I forgot Naslund doesn't play there anymore. Still, I think they're a team that has solid D, a great goalie and solid forwards. But besides the Sedins and Demetria, they lack another outstanding forward. Sundin will give them two solid lines.

Everyone knows he signed there because of Wellwood.

im sorry i just dont get this - i mean if he really wants to win the stanley cup (like he supposedly does) he would have went to detroit or san jose - maybe new york or pittsburgh.

it seems to me like he would like to win the stanley cup but what he really cared about was getting top dollar. good luck to him.

He signed a one year deal, not the 2 year $20 million. I believe its pro-rated at $7 mil. Vancouver with him could be real good and I think he realizes that. Detroit, San Jose and Pittsburgh all were not publicly involved in signing him for whatever reasons. It seems like New York couldn't clear up the cap.

I heard the final pro-rated amount is 5.7M

I think it's fucking gay.

The 'best fit' in the entire league also happens to be the team that offered him, by far, the most money? Funny how that worked out.

Are the Canucks going to get by Detroit and San Jose in the West? Not a chance.

If I was all about the Benjamins, I would've signed back in July and gotten the two years for $20 million instead of the one year for $7 million.

What's it about then? It's not about giving himself the best chance to win the Stanley Cup.

Comments like that are the reason people are raised to believe it is wrong.

On another note, quite happy to see Sundin go out West, especially since we've already played Vancouver. Goodluck until playoffs Mats!

I will stand by my opinion that Sundin is vastly overrated.

That being said, good deal for Vancouver, signing a good player without having to move anybody and still have room under the cap to spare.

Although it would be super ownage if the Canucks managed to miss the playoffs.

It's a bit of column A and a bit of column B. It's never purely "Cup or money". Or else you'd see players signing for league min. or otherwise.

Even Hossa's discount had him at $7.4 million -- why didn't he take even less to help the Wings win the cup?

So at this point in the season, how many teams could take a Sundin contract at $7 million? The Sharks or the Wings would have to move big pieces of their team to fit him in.

I will stand by my opinion that Sundin is vastly overrated.

I totally agree on him being overrated. But I'd expect his reputation to draw enough top D-pairing shifts away from the Sedins that it ends up helping their offensive numbers. He'll probably draw in to 45 games and get 35 points, not point-per-game.

It's a one-year deal, and Vancouver has a better offense in front of Luongo compared to 2 years ago. He just needs to turn into a brick wall again in the playoffs.

This article sums up my opinion of this situation in its entirety very well.

Couldn't agree more. The 'Hired Gun' thing is what gets me annoyed. I thought he should have signed before training camp. And even now i don't like the pick of Vancouver over the rangers. He should have taken the 2 mill from the rags and took a shot at the cup. Not with a team with a shady offense and a brick wall with a GROIN injury.
