SidCaeser 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 We had a captains meeting this last week. We were looking forward to the next seesion, and team selection came up. Do you field your own teams, or do you have an evaluation and draft teams? Currently, our captains our responsible for recruiting and maintaining the teams. My concern is playing the same teams for 26 games for several years could build up resentment/grudges. That is the reason several of us left a league. If you mix the teams each season, you get to skate with the ass you couldn't stand last season. Any thoughts... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
tdjb 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 We kind of have both. A lot of guys know who they want on their team so they tell them to sign up with the league under team so-and-so. Others who don't know anybody or who don't care can sign up as "free agents" and are just placed on a team that needs them. My summer team was probably about 85% free agents but my winter team is probably more like 20%. I've only played in two adult leagues (in different states) and both were run this way. Race4LastPlace 31 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 my league only has 3 teams currently, so at the end of the season we have a 'draft'. Basically a big party (just had ours 2 weeks ago as a christmas party). We take 3 evenly skilled/rated players and put there names in an envelope. Then when we draw that envelope, the 3 players come up, and basically draw a colored token from a hat, and thats there team for the season. Its worked out pretty well so far, and makes for a good party. We have tons of food, projectors and screens for 'draft coverage'. followed by karaoke after the draft. Ive been lucky to play on the better teams so far, but there's word on the street that they'll be spliting up my team next season...In Singapore, it was basically who could 'draft' or recruit the better/best players. Some teams folded, with good players being snapped up by already good players. The past few years, its always the same few teams that have won or made the finals, and seemingly pushes the younger/less experienced teams to extinction. They tried to have a 'draft' a few years ago, but in the end, some players just jumped to other teams that suited them better (aka better teams).most of the guys there dont really care about the 'benefit' of the sport... its either to make money selling gear at huge profits, or running up the score to show off that they are really good. They cream the younger guys really badly, and even when they are 10-zip up, they still hack and push players of a lesser skating ability. Pisses me off when they pick on the average skaters who are trying their best to play, and these players get really embarassed when their family is in the crowd. Mom & Dad usually then question the reasoning in spending $XXX to play a sport that has no sportmanship... might as well play chess. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Two of the four teams are cool with it. (The two best teams.) The third just wants to play, and the fourth is sick of getting drummed, but it is right to force them to recruit just to win? Is that the besrt way to grow/maintain a league? If we go to a draft, will we lose a number of the better players, but gain guys that just want to play? Yoke 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 In the leagues I play in, the managers just put together the teams, mostly of guys that know each other, or friends of players that are already on the team. reyno2ac 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2008 We have a "rate skate" but the major problem is that people keep their teams together by having the players they want to keep skip the rate skate. Then they just pick those players and the other team captains have no idea that they were any good. It's not a big deal though, because the teams are pretty fair. Any needed fillers the league cooridinator fills with "free agents" (see people who dont have a set team, just pay to play etc.In my roller leagues, our top division, names get thrown into a scrambler and new teams are formed different from the last season.
