NHL Tests New Net with Leafs

Recommended Posts

There's a school of thought that the larger ice surface actually makes for a slower game...and it's also a HUGE logistical problem to retrofit every arena in the league to international dimensions, not to mention you lose revenue because you'd have to take out a bunch of seats.

I'd like to see someone at least try a slightly larger net, maybe just slightly taller? Sure it would change the angles for a goalie a bit, but doesn't having smaller equipment also slightly change your angles? I don't see why they shouldn't at least run a few practices or something with a different net. Players are bigger, goalies are bigger, equipment is bigger...I don't see how it's outrageous to suggest you make the net bigger.

I think the only logical, and reasonably implemented solution to the goal scoring issue is Goalie padding size. It is getting ludicrous how bulky the pads are.

They are for protection. Incrementally shrink the size each year or so, giving the goalies time to adjust. It truly is insane to see the differences in size when watching older games.

Baseball shrunk the size of it second generation of stadiums to increase home runs, and then again with this last round of building. They also lowered the mound six inches in 1969 (I think), because scoring was down and they felt pitchers had too much of an advantage.

The MLB mound is 10 inches. It has been moved up and down over the years but it currently sits at 10 inches.

I found this Prototype net with curved posts. I think I would prefer it to a taller or wider net.

That just looks crazy! I don't think it should be that high above his head. You will just get sniped there constantly.

that looks awful, honestly I dont think I'd feel good about myself scoring on a net like that...

The thought of oval shaped pipes has been popping into my mind every time I hear "Hit the post!" whilst my team is on the attack in the playoffs.

I'd favor reducing the amount obstructing, hindering, clutching and grabbing that still goes on rather than fiddling with the goal dimensions or shape. I wouldn't mind eliminating or modifying rules about goals scored off a high stick, it's quite a skill and their are safety alternatives now that make it less dangerous.

I think it's funny how concerned people are with goalie safety when the question of pad reduction comes up, and then they make a net where people will deliberately snipe towards their head!!

edited - for grammar

True. The only thing the goalies are protecting with the huge pads they have now is the open space players could be shooting at. Like the ludicrous heights of the pads. What are they protecting? Are they that way to make sure the padded pants they wear dont get hurt? LOL. No, it was designed for the butterfly goalie to close that nice little five hole....at least I think that is what they do that for. :)
