Most of the larger stores have some of the worst employees, they're business is in volume, not quality service... and even then, look at some of the larger Canadian stores, their prices are higher... Why? Because it costs them more to bring in the product.

BUT by all means support the US economy, we can use the help.

not many bailouts here in Europe, but I hear what you're saying and just for the record I'm against the whole bailout idea: huge enterprisez and banks make bad decisions and the government bails them out with tax money, while the small buissneses are left to die, I just don't think it's right. peace

Just wanted to add to this my experience. I had a friend in New York order some gear for me and then ship it on - and some skates for guys at the local rink. So far i've paid US$280 or so in postage on abour $1800 of goods however i still have to work out how to get the 40" CCM bag over yet, as USPS are saying it's too big to ship.

Just to give you a comparison of prices here in Perth, Western Australia (1.6million people). We have 1 ice hockey shop, it's at the one and only ice rink (single rink inside).

- The waxed laces i was buying online for $3USD we pay AU$25 for here - that's 16USD.

- I bought Bauer Vapour IX's to get back into skating (after a 9 year break), these cost me AU$250, they are online for US$50.

- Easton Synergy ST-4 shin pads, AU$175, or about US$30 online. These were the top of the line pad they had.

Nothing above mid level is stocked. We can't get CCM here, i'm told that the exclusive Australian distributor wont sell to anyone but his retail customers, however CCM won't let HockeyMonkey/Giant ship them to Australia.

I'm all for supporting the local companies, and plan to continue buying at the ice rink however with prices like this it makes it difficult to get decent protection :(

Another aussie here. While the mark-up on hockey equipment is very high here in au it is understandable from a business perspective - the market is small and stock wouldnt move very fast. Would be a tough business to run.

Darn, your making me feel luckey for what we've got in melbourne!!! Nice to see some more aussies here as well, even if it is talk about the massive price we pay to play the game we love...

Even Hockey Monkey's shipping to the states is higher than other places. Their regular ground shipping starts at like $13. At Icewarehouse, they quote $11 I think for 2-day shipping. 2-day shipping from Hockey Monkey is quoted at about $45. What gives? If I'm not mistaken, they're both coming UPS from California.

I'd also like to know why the shipping seems to be locked so high for international shipping, $60 to ship a $3.48 pair of waxed laces to AUS... I think I'll pass uless they decide they can use something smaller than a skate box...

PS: I wouldn't really order something as small as that from overseas, just wanted to do that as an example...

It is frustrating that their shipping is fixed, especially when I can get a stick from ebay shipped via USPS and it will cost me AU $40 or less, and HM want $80... their shipping is super fast though, took around 3 days or so to get to me here in Melbourne.

I've been trying to get a hold of some Bauer/Easton/Warrior standard taper blades and get them shipped to the UK, no success with any of the big (and some lesser known) online stores in the US for Bauer or Easton which was expecting but also worrying like Warrior. I've had Warrior stuff shipped direct in the past 6 months no problems but now all of a sudden there seems to have been a change in policy?

I did however finally found what I was looking for north of the border, still 25% cheaper per blade (shipped) then it would be in the UK. I understand the whole being protective of your distributors thing, but maybe they shouldn't charge them so much in the first place.. its not such a big deal now with the terrible exchange rates but back when the rates were good you could get stuff just over half price, including shipping.

don't mean to hijack the thread, but wath's the deal with ebay stores? they have cheaper skates than online sites like monkey and warehouse and they charge less on shipping (a friend got a pair of 9k with only 40$ shipping charge in RO) and btw hockeyoffice have very high prices, obscene high

EDIT: a pair of skates is charged with 80$ on monkey and 100 on warehouse, he got them for 40$ from an ebay store

will be shipped by USPS rather than UPS/Fedex etc. The ebay stores still charge more for shipping then it is worth, got a quote back last week for 2 blades and shipping was $40. My friend in the states shipped me 4 blades & a pair of pants for less..

Hockey office looks like a euro store which is why its high, everything in europe is higher in price. As for the skates, I know a few people who have brought skates from ebay stores (purely because Monkey and Icewarehouse wont ship to Australia) and when the skates arrived and went to be sharpened the blades were heavily warped. Needless to say they spent a while getting them fixed (send it back etc), so I've been a bit wary of ordering through these guys (I did get a nice pair of Vapor XXII a while ago for around $250 AUD, shipped).

Then again another mate got RBKs from Hockeymonkey that were extremely bad, and spent ages getting them shipped back (he got them shipped through a mate in the US).

I always find it amazing when I get the Easton/Mission Insider Magazine mailed to me at the start of a season with gear thats a year old and prices that are 2-3x what they should be even with rapid shipping, currency conversion and GST. While I would love to support the LHS, the distributors in Australia charge them so much there is no way they could compete with the US. Its not the LHS that are ripping us off in Australia its the distrubutors, and thats why they have the restrictive rules of sale outside the US/Canada.

move, or take up beach volleyball

unfortunately where you live is a hindrance to enjoying the game you love cheaply... well slightly less expensively

I know its a pain to have to read us whinging, but Im sure you wouldnt want to pay $350 for an top of the range stick either..

Somehow skates are very pricy in Germany where Hockeyoffice is placed. But alot of other gear is ok priced. Right now i think the best place to get gear is in Sweden if you want CCM or RBK. The swedish krona is low at the moment. Realy looking to going overseas this fall maby i can pick up some small gear. To bad i cant get a new bag of gear with me back
