Ankle pains...

Recommended Posts

I recently got a new pair of Vapor and I am having some pain on the outside of one of my ankles. They felt great when I tried them on and I didnt even feel the need to bake them as there was absolutely no pain, anywhere. The right skate fits perfectly with no complaints whatsoever. The left is giving me pain immediately above the ankle bone, so I guess not the ankle bone itself; I've tried tying it looser, skipping two eyelets instead of one, lacing all the way up, etc. The weird thing, to me anyway, is that I didnt have this problem immediately. I played probably 20 hours in them and then started to develop this problem.

Any suggestions? Should I try heating that one area of the boot, have them punched, etc?

I had that same problem a couple of years ago with Easton 1500c. The boot was just not deep enough and the top of the boot would rub at that spot. I tried all the quick fixes, etc., but still had the problem.

I changed to RBK pump skates and the problem was resolved, although the heel was wider. I then went to One75s, and they have been great for 6+ months now.

Bake them/have them punched out. I had the same issue with my Graf G3's. Felt wonderful... until I hit the ice. Pain was almost unbearable in a small area on the inside of each foot just ahead/below the ankle bone. Skated off, unlaced them... ran across the street to a shop and had them baked/punched... let them cool off outside (plenty cold up here where we live, lol) for a short time... and then went back inside to the ice. Voila! No pain or discomfort whatsoever.

I'd have to agree with the above.

I am by no means an expert, but I have tried many pairs of skates. Most recently I am on a pair of 9Ks after 7Ks, and all Bauers prior (despite trying other brands before moving to RBK). Back in my younger days the Bauers were always custom fit, so although I know I had a wide outer bone on my foot, I never noticed. But now, having to buy retail (and pay for them myself!), I have not been as lucky.

I developed a "mass" on my inner right ankle bone, most likely due to some trauma at some point, perhaps a puck to the ankle - how the orthopaedic described it. Rubbing on my skate would increase its size, which of course did not help. I had it removed, but the ankle bone is still quite large. My doctor's recommendation was custom skates or to suffer. Of course, custom skates can be pricey, but lots of LHSs offer services to punch them out. Unfortunately punching them out is permanent. Therefore, I would recommend the following - Baking them... try them out... then consulting LHS for options on punching them out. That should solve your problem, else, might need to talk to the LHS about other options.

Good luck!

Elihl, ask your Dr. to recommend an Athletic Therapist/Trainer, take the skates and guards if you use them, and explain your problem. If it were me I would suggest heel and lace pads ( thin foam squares used by many athletes to reduce lace bite or overly tight fitting footwear) and skin lube, or fashion a donut you could apply around the malleolus (ankle bone). This will allow the skate sides to ride against the donut allowing the bone to float free and untouched in the centre of the donut. Try the sollution while you are there, lace them on and walk around for a few minutes (thus the reason for the guards) to see if the problem arises.

Bake them. You can also try bunga pads. I had a similar problem after baking my One90's. After a few games with the bunga pad in the offending location the skates were broken in and I didn't need it anymore to make skating tolerable.

Thanks ddpatc. I have actually been using a foam pad. That's what I started with, until I found the time to have the surgery in the off-season. Didn't need the ankle scoped, so I only ended up being out for just over a month (cut into golf more than hockey). And since, I have continued to use a similar foam pad just because it is still a bit raw in the area, and I don't want things to come back.

Guess my next pair of skates, I will be looking to do something a bit more custom than looking online, try in-store, find the best price, then hope they fit. I know, not the best plan, but having to pay for them yourself makes it difficult to justify paying the high price for the latest and greatest.

I was finally able to convince the wife that I am still on the ice so much that it is worth it... okay, it was her convincing me, but again, difficult not to be stingy and heed the advice.

But thanks for the suggestions.

just recently finally got a chance to use my Nike Flexlite 12s that i got used here on MSH.

used them today and i had the same exact problem as tooold and awe46m3 on my right ankle. my left ankle fit the skates completely fine (as does the right.. it just got really uncomfortable on my ankle) no discomfort, straight ankle. everything. i've never had the "bender" problem (where in your foot somewhat bends inwards as you skate.) my foot has always generally been straight/tight fitting in every skate i've owned ( currently i have these flexlite 12s and a pair of older nikes (circa fedorov days) that i've never had any problems with)and it doesn't move around.

today i was skating at the city's outdoor rink downtown and they felt really good on my feet.. then after a couple laps around i found my ankle start to somewhat bend inwards at a weird ankle and had a sharp pain right around my ankle bone.

i guess i'll take them to the LHS and ask them what i can do. i've never had skates baked or punched. i understand the baking concept but can someone explain the concept of punching a skate?

PS: just looked at my fedorov nikes and i broke them in nice enough to where my foot/ankle molded naturally to the footbed and inner wall on the boot (my ankle bone meets directly with where my foot molded to the skate).. that's why i haven't had any problems.. but i noticed on the flexlites.. i guess due to them being used, my ankle bone doesn't meet up with the already existing somewhat molded in spot from the previous owner's foot? (if that makes sense) can that be fixed somehow with punching? or how would i go about fixing that? i love these skates.. so much that i may get white felt tongues installed soon.

What are bunga pads and where do you get them? I am taking my skates to the LHS I bought them at today to see about getting that one spot punched. As I look at the skate more and more as compared to the right side, which fits nicely, it looks as if the left is narrower near the top. So I am thinking that might be why I am getting this pain on the left side...
