Phelps Hockey Night

All I have to say is that it's kind of funny how fast you can go from being a hero and having everyone kissing your ass to being a laughing stock.

Oh god, a young man hit the bong a little, news at 11!

Exactly how do you define a laughing stock...because you know he's still got like more gold medals than anyone else ever. Hell, I think he should be APPLAUDED even more for being able to do what he did, while taking performance de-enhancing drugs like that.

I give him more credit for just coming out and admitting he made a mistake. He didn't try to lie and say it was tobacco or say it wasn't him or that it was a joke... he made himself responsible for his own actions. I'm not one for putting responsibility of professional athletes being role models but... if I had kids, I'd rather them look up to someone that isn't prefect that owns up to their mistakes over someone that does no wrong. Perfection is a hard goal to aim for, responsibility is not.

As far as I'm concerned it's not really a mistake, the only "mistake" in that situation was letting the douchebag who took the picture keep it and then let it out.

I tend to doubt he was hitting much of anything while training. At any rate, I think when you're pubicially disgraced, have sponsers dump you like a hot patato, and minor league hockey teams making you into a tongue in check event you've become a laughing stock. Sure, it's a little absurd. How many people really haven't at least once or twice. That said, I simply find it funny how fickle people are.

Well said.

That was certainly the biggest mistake, though I'd say that doing it in the first place was also a mistake.

Michael Vic was publicly disgraced, had sponsors/endorsements dump him (assuming he had them, dunno personally) and a minor league baseball team gave out rubber dog toys at a game to honor him; so basically the same treatment....laughing stock, yes? no?

I guess I just don't see what's funny about either case, I feel pretty bad for him getting catching all this kind of attention over a bong hit; or I just don't share your definition of a laughing stock, I just assumed some laughing would be involved.

Not the same, people absolute hate Michael Vic, myself among them. While people are laughing at Phelps and he's lost the favor of the masses, large numbers of people aren't wishing him dead and calling for his public execution.

Phelps isn't an idiot, he knew there could be ramifications for using controlled substances. As much as I think the American obession is absurd, things are the way they are. Sadly for him there won't be time for this to just blow over, the fame of an olympic swimmer has a pretty short self life even if you do win 9 gold medals. I do hope this doesn't prevent him from transitioning into other aspects of the sport as most olympians manage to do.

i dont believe that he really is sorry. he just made the public appology to try to stay in the favor of his sponsers. if he did not lose sponsorship money, i dont think that he would stop. im not sure that he did to begin with. so what the kid had a toke, big deal
