Need New Pants, any suggestions

Recommended Posts

My team has finally convinced me to get new pants (they are tired of seeing my jock hang out of the big hole in the crotch). I'm looking for pants that are light and have great mobility. Protection is of course important, but i'm willing to sacrifice some if needed to get the extra mobility. Any suggestions? I was looking at the Tackla Flex and stride, but I don't know anyone who has ever tried them on. They're discontinued, but i did find a pain online that would fit.

+1 on the girdle. I went from pants to a girdle about a year ago, with the same type of requirements....more mobility giving up protection. But that's A/B no-check beer league hockey.

I think it honestly depends on what level you are playing. If you are playing in a league with checking then I would shy away from a girdle. I have worn a tackla girdle in the past and there is a total difference in padding between a girdle and pants. Right now I am wearing CCM Super Tacks 892 and I couldn't be happier with the mobility and protection they offer. I'm sure the new CCM pants are just as good since mine are a couple years old.

I play in pretty physical leagues and my Vapor XXXX girdle is plenty solid. Though, if you can pick up some top-level Mission pants at closeout prices, I've had good luck with those as well.

I honestly can't stand the feel of girdles or the current CCM vector pants. It makes me sad because I want nothing more than to buy those top end Supra pants over and over til a check breaks my old enfeebled hip :P

I need the classic "giant padded tube" design like those old supras, and current bauer supreme line has, but you know...with tailbone protection (find my "ow my ass" thread if you want to hear about that ;) )

Thanks Guys. I think my decision is just as hard now as it was before. I tried on the Tackla's 951 but it felt too tight in the waist. I was going to try a bigger size, but they didn't have one. I'm going to stay away from a girdle. Going to try on a few more before I make my decision. Any other suggestions, please let me know. Won't be buying until the weekend.

Junior,

I think it depends on what kind of fit you like for your pants. Do you like it tight at the waist (no suspenders) and have the pants just kind of float or do you prefer a loose fit in t he waist with the pants being supported by suspenders.

The Bauer Vapor 10's from 2003 are the pants I used for years and those held up awesomely. Lots of protection and great mobility. There was no restriction to my stride at all and I loved them until I finally had to get new ones a month ago. They fit tight in the waist. I say that because I prefer the strap to keep them on tight in the waist and they also have no studs for suspenders.

I recently switched to the new CCM V10s. They have loads of protection and are fairly light. They did slightly interfere with my stride because of the big but pad in it. After a few weekends wearing them around the apartment for hours they broke in. The belt don't get them as tight as I prefer so they just sit on my waist but they do allow for suspenders. Using those I can loosen the belt a little and rely on the suspender and since doing that I have to say it's been a lot better for me. Also they have zippers on the sides to allow for more room through the legs. I highly recommend the current CCM line.

I tried on a lot of pants at my LHS (used to work there too) and although I've never bought CCM previously (mostly a Bauer/Easton fan, had Reebok/Jofa equipment, hated it, awful) but after trying it out and ultimately purchasing it, I have to say it's some of the best stuff I've ever used. I would strongly suggest giving them a serious look.

I moved from the Mission M2's to the RbK 5k and loved them. They both have a more "streamlined" fit (IMO) with more maneuverability for the legs. Decent protection from the 5k also.

I'd like to add, I briefly switched over to Reebok 6k's for a while and got rid of them about a month in. The protection was weak, the floating girdle idea they had going was awful when put in practice and the pants didn't hold up at all. It was quite disappointing.

I really like the NBH Supreme One90 pants. They have decent protection and allow great mobility.

The One90s are a great pant but I was very disappointed with the fit of them for me, tried two different pairs but could never get used them. The protection was good, just a very bulky fitting pant inside.

I just got a pair of Hustlers this week and they seem very impressive so far, I've been looking for a pant that is similar in design to the upper of my old original Vapor 10 pants(I cut the floating belt off and removed the elastic that slimmed down the legs) that I really enjoyed and kept going back to and the legs are very streamlined and comfortable, the different shape of the thigh board and amount of protection seems great. I'll be using them for the first time tomorrow morning at drop-in so hopefully they meet my expectations, I think they will.

I got some easton stealth motion elite pants, they are a two piece pant and it includes a cup and velcro for your socks. Extremely comfortable and mobile, pretty light as well, I highly recommend them.

DR HP88 or HP80. It has a two way belt system thats really comfortable.

It's low to mid cut in the waist area and has good four-way stretch gussets in the legs.

Pro protection with lightweight comfort.

Very underrated pant in the industry.

Tackla 9000 or 5000 would have been my second choice.

Is money a concern? First off search around ebay, craigslist, hockey forums wherever for slightly used pants. Obviously wouldn't recommend heavily worn pants. But if you can save some change on somebody who got some that don't fit or didn't like "the feel" meaning they used it a few times. You're in luck.

I got NBH one90 pants and, though a little overkill for the wallet, really worth the balance of mobility, weight, and protection.

I have a pair of Easton Pro stock pants and couldn't be happier with mobility and protection. Try a search on ebay. East West Hockey.com had a lot of pairs but it seems that they are sold out now, but I would keep an eye on them for when they get the pro pants in. Only issue with them is I have had to do a few minor sewing repairs on them as the stitching came undone in a few areas.

Not to hijack this thread but im also in the market for new pants. Would any members her be able to compare Tackla 951s to Rbk 5/7Ks. Why to go with one over the other?

So....I went to my LHS and tried on a few different pants. Didn't like any of them really except for the Tackla 951's. The size was a bit too small and they didn't have my size in stock. I went to another store and they didn't have my size either. I went to a 3rd store and they had my size and a larger selection. In the end, I got a pair of Tackla 4400 Flex and Stride. I was having a tough time between those and the Tackla 5000 air. The 5000 air didn't have as much protection in the mid section and the mobility between the 2 were almost the same.

Just wanna add that I tried on about 4 or 5 different NBH models and didn't like any of them. I get to test out the new pants on sunday.

Thanks for all the help guys.
