Question for those who have subscribed to The Hockey News

Recommended Posts

So, I subscribed to the Hockey News magazine for a couple of years, but as of this past august, I decided not to renew. And I didn't receive anything.

I get home from work today and there is a current episode in my mailbox (the Trade Deadline Preview issue).

I checked my bank account, and I have not been charged for anything. I have not reactivated my subscription, and when I logged into THN.com, it shows my status as expired.

So, for those of you who have cancelled a subscription, have thn ever sent you a "free" magazine to entice you back, or is this just a processing error?

Thought maybe with it being the new year and whatnot, they may sent out a free issue to former subscribers to get them back or something

I have had a subscription to THN since 1971. I never received any free issues. I did keep a collection going until 1985 when I traded them in at the local hockey card shop. I picked up a Topps 79 NHL set with the Gretzky rookie, a 71 Topps NHL set, 2 WHA Topps sets and a few other NHL sets from the 70s. I thought it was a good deal!

THN has changed a lot over the years but its great to read when you're in the bathroom!

Happened to me with Reader's Digest a while back. I got nearly 2 years from a 1 year subscription.

Sometimes it just takes them a little while to update the subscription rolls I would guess, to your benefit.

But I cancelled in august, and this is the first I got since then

I'd watch out my brother was telling me how some companies send them and end up

Charging you for them because your accepting somthing that your not supposed to get. His buddy was getting rolling stone for free and they charged him. It's almost like a scam. I would tell them just to stay on the safe side.

I've often received issuses from mags as enticment to reup, but B&G's got a point sometimes you got to watch it. If you get another issue I'd think about calling them.

Gouche has told me that advertisements are the main source of revenue for magazines, while the subscriptions and newsstand sales are gravy. Combine that with potential volume discounts depending on a particular production run, and it's possible that the only real cost to try to win you back as a subscriber is the bulk mail fees. (Even though subscriptions are gravy, their advertising rates are based on the number of eyeballs reading the magazine, so they are motivated to have you renew.)

On the topic of whether they would try to charge someone for receiving the magazine after the subscription expired, there is no agreement between you and the publisher, nor do they report to the credit bureaus, so the simplest solution is to refuse to pay.

Aye, basically subscriptions are just a way to pad circulation numbers a little, which in turn means they can ask for more for their ad space.
