Recommended Posts

I hope this is in the right section, he plays in the NHL.....

I would like to know kopitar's middle name or any other foreign player with a crazy name would be good too

IE: Ilya Valteryvich Kovalchuk (sp)

WE and a few buddies are registering our worthless senior id's with russian, slovenian, swedish, ect hockey players for fun and i could use a few more full names. :P

FYI, the Russian middle name is the father's name with "vich" (probably meaning "from" or something) added. So if Kovalchuk had kids their middle names would be Ilyavich, or whatever the proper form would be.

Sergei Viktorovich Fedorov

Well, just check Wikipedia...

Not all people have middle names. Anze Kopitar doesn't for example.

Russians, and other Slavic peoples, don't have middle names. What we'd call a middle name is a paternity label called a patronymic. These are used in formal speech and derive from the custom in the past of labeling individuals as (insert given name) son of (insert father's name). You also see it in Arabic, in the the Latin alphabet it's rendered Ibn, something like Ahmed Ibn Mohammed means: Ahmed, son of Mohammed.

In the given examples:

Alexander Valerievich Semin

Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin

Pavel Vladimirovich Bure

It would break down: Alexander the son of Valerie, Alexander the son of Mikhail, Pavel the son of Vladimir.
