crazylegs_9 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 Wondering how realistic these games measure up when using the nonchuck as a stick for passing, shooting, etc...Used the search function, but did not come up with anything.

Neal 41 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 I have NHL 2K9 and beyond the excellent gear representation (from our very own JR) and the novelty of checking with a checking like motion, I didn't enjoy it very much. Not much of a hockey feel to it.
RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2009 I bought 2K9 for the 360 and a friend gave me his copy for the Wii. The games are different to be sure, not just in terms of graphics. The Wii version has somewhat less realism, but this is nicely balanced by not needing to spend tons of time mastering using the right analog stick and bumper buttons for dekes and other moves. mnpucker 33 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 my kids have Wii and xbox. wii for family use and Xbox for sports. NHL 09 is awesome as mentioned in other posts. 2k9 on wii is not good, graphics are horrible and I also believe there are a ot of glitches and so forth. The controls are nowhere near what you would think they could be. In fact between 2k9 and a lame fishing game the kids got for a gift I would say it is the worst wee game I have seen.Wii is awesome but not the current hockey game. ArcArsenal 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 I tried 2K9 for Wii - did not really feel like I was playing hockey...maybe as much as I felt I was playing football with Madden for reference.A friend told me EA sports is working/waiting for a wrist attachment that will better simulate realy hockey - dangles, shots, etc... if they made something like that I would be all over it. goodguy 7 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Put it this way - I bought a Wii the day they came out because I thought it would be the ultimate platform for a hockey game. After a few years of waiting (and being really bummed with all the crappy Wii games) - finally 2k9 hockey comes out for Wii. My kids are excited. We get the game the day it comes out.Plug it into our Wii and just can't wait for the fun of shooting withteh Wii remote, checking and the whole bit.Instead we ended up laughing ourselves silly at how stupid the and poor quality the animations and player faces looked. This game was worse than a gameboy version. It was really that bad. The player faces look like mannequins and the gameplay was horrid. The Wiimote did nothing for the experience and in fact convinced me that the wii would never be anything more than a kiddy game console good for mario party type games. Lets face it, Wii sports bowling is the pinnacle of wii games and will always be the best thing they could come up with for that platform.SO - I sold my Wii on ebay (for a loss as the Wii is not as cheap as you think once you buy all the ridiculous crap extras for it). AND - I bought a PS3.First game I got for my PS3 - NHL 09 and all I can say is .... "all is right in the world".I can't even compare the graphics betwen the Wii and PS3. They are night and day. NHL 09 on PS3 is the ultimate hockey game experience. Not only can you play online, but you can join ad-hoc games with other real players from around the world where you actually play a position (i.e Right D). You can also form teams and play in the EA league for a real EA Sports Trophy (stanley cup like). Not only that, there is a "be a pro mode", where you can enter the league, drafted to an organization, work your way up the ranks form the AHL into the pro level. One of the cool thngs in this mode is you do your shift on the ice, get tired and have to go to the bench to recover. During your bench time (or box time if you were bad), you actually watch the game as if you were sitting on the bench. Makes for a more immersive hockey experience and really fun to play.My kids absolutely love NHL 09 on the PS3. My advice. Do not waste your time or money with the Wii - it is a neat gimmick for a year and then you will find that most Wii games are really crapware. I cannot speak for Xbox360 as I do not own one but from my expereince with the PS3 - I would say it is an amazing console with some of the most cutting edge games available. Plus the PS3 contains a Bluray, hardrive, etc - all included and much of this necessary stuff is not avaialble/cost extra with the Xbox. Plus you can get like $150 off a playstation by opening a Sony Credit Card. Pretty simple. The Xbox may have more install base due to when it came out and the unfortunate (for Sony) timing of the PS3 vs Wii releases (higher pricing). But ultimately the PS3 has the exclusive titles which everybody is talking about and are really amazing (Drakes Fortune, Assasins Creed, Etc.) - just a total entertainment machine with Blu Ray, etc.EA will probably never come out with NHL for the Wii and that tells you something. If you buy a Wii, you will end up buying way too many games that suck looking for the ONE which is any good. And spots games are lame on the Wii.I find I am buying fewer games for the PS3 because they are do darn good. MLB09 looks absolutely AMAZING and real - it just shows you the upside of a next gen console like the PS3 - Wii is not considered next gen.
Miike 1 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 I can't even compare the graphics betwen the Wii and PS3. They are night and day. That's because you're not supposed to. Nintendo was never one for graphics as lets say Sony. The Wii isn't looking to achieve the graphic goals etc.. as when Sony releases the PS3, they want it to look amazing High Def TV's etc. The Wii is meant to be interactive, and that it is. My family has had a Wiii for about a month now, and i love it. It's great fun. When you're sitting around watching TV and nothings on, "Hey, lets bowl on the Wii" and we can sit there laugh and have fun for awhile doing that. You're trying to compare the Wii and PS3 on the same level, when they are two totally different machines. The Wii is not for a hardcore game who plays sports game or whatever everyday. It's not that type of gaming system. Tiger Woods on the Wii is pretty fun, so i wouldn't say Bowling isn't the pinnacle of the Wii games. Its tough, because you have to be right on with each shot, just like REAL golf.Edit: I also own a PS3 and i do agree that NHL 09 is unreal on that system, as a matter of fact thats all i play on my PS3. But i don't go shunning the Wii because i can't play NHL 09 on it and have it be excatly the same. Each system has it's Pro's and Con's.
RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 First, trying to compare the Wii and the 360/PS3 is pointless. Nintendo didn't made a next gen machine, and HD graphics has never been the point of the Wii. The Wiimote interface is really unique and probably the future of gaming. You can't blame Nintendo because a third party developer, Sega in the case of the 2K series, can't be bothered to properly program for it. Sure the Wii appeals to causal gamers, there's nothing wrong with that. Not everyone wants to set down and play Dead Space, Killzone, Halo 3, or what have you. End of the day, if you buy a motorcycle and expect it to be a car the problem isn't the bike, it's you. While I don't tend to get into these debates, the PS3 is third in sales for a reason. Yes, you can buy a verison of the Xbox without a hard drive for a very low price, $199. Thus you could buy the Xbox hard drive and still pay much less than you would for a PS3 You could buy an Pro, or Elite, version of the Xbox 360 for less than the PS3. The reason the PS3 is more expensive is because of Blu-Ray, which adds absolutely nothing to actual game play. What you're paying extra for are better looking pre-rendered cut scenes in the game. Sony gambled that the Blu-Ray player would do for the PS3 what the DVD player did for the PS2. The problem is they failed to take into account the differences between the format war between DVD and VHS as compared to Blu-Ray and DVD. When DVD hit the market people were ready for DVD, they expected DVD, and they wanted DVD. The optical disc format was just superior to VHS tape in every way you can imagine. While Blu-Ray offers better picture and sound, it's not nearly as superior to DVD and DVD was to VHS. Also, in a tight economy, people are a lot less likely to want to take on the added cost of basically replacing their home movie collection to Blu-Ray and what's the point of just using a Blu-Ray player to simply watch DVD's? The 360 is backward compatible with most games, while early PS3's were on a limited basis, Sony has completely eliminated this feature on new PS3's. The PS3 is a good system, but over all you're paying too much for a Blu-Ray drive that doesn't impact the game play.
interpathway 9 Report post Posted March 10, 2009 Don't forget that the 2K hockey games' graphics were never as good as the EA series.
goodguy 7 Report post Posted March 10, 2009 The OP stated how "realistic these games are using a nunchuck..."The second posting "I'm interested too...getting a wii..."I think my answer summed it up.For HOCKEY - the Wii SUCKS.For party games - the Wii is great. You can even pay a couple hundred dollars and step on and off a plastic board and get in great hockey shape (that was sarcasm). Was I mistaken? This is ModSquadHockey and the OP was asking about Hockey right?I don't think he was asking about Raving Rabbitts was he?As far as "the Wiimote is the way of the future" is IMO wrong. The wiimote has yet to prove it is anything but a neat gimmick which is cool for a few games and hinders gameplay on most games. My kids regularly go back to the handheld controllers on the Gamecube, PS3, Xbox (freinds house) because they just work and you don't have to look like an ass pumping up a video game balloon until it pops - wow, you mean I can buy a console and buy a game to do that (sign me up).People can move their arms and step up onto a board- who would have thought?Dont get me wrong - the Wii IS great fun - but for a specific type of game and not for what the original poster asked (being Hockey simulation game). As far as cost - the PS3 includes everything the Xbox doesn't (and can't, blur-ray, bluetooth, etc) and PS3 probably ends up being cheaper in the long run. Of course I am justifying the PS3 because I own one but if you think you will ever own a blu-ray player - then it is cheaper to just get the PS3.Wii is like a Bug (fun and cute), XBox is like a Toyota (looks decent and somewhat affordable), and PS3 is like a BMW (enthusiast machine). Depends on what you want.So if you want to play like a realistic Hockey game - get a PS3 or XBox360 (and NHL 09).If you want to hold a remote on your head and bounce up and down like a monkey laughing - then get a Wii. RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2009 Sony tried that whole "the PS3 is cheaper in the long run thing," totally failed advertising. Your description is completely off base, in terms of console power there are real differences between the PS3 and the 360, which is why the games look about the same. Some PS3 games feature HD pre-rendered cut scenes that require a Blu-Ray sized optical disc, most of them don't and aren't using any more space than is provided by DVD. The games themselves are the same size. Most developers consider the development tools for the 360 to be superior to Sony's. If you want a Blu-Ray player the PS3 might be the way to go, if you don't (or don't care) the 360 is the better choice. The Wiimote is the first step in a more interactive gaming experience. Nintendo has been quite famous for it's control innovations in the past, replacing joysticks the the D pad, the rumble pack, the analog stick, and so on. The technology is still in its early stages right now and most developers simply aren't good at programming for the Wiimote yet.

RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 Not everything works, the powerglove was a good example of an idea that was just ahead of it's time. The fact you couldn't find a Wii in stores two years after it's launch, and frankly still can't in some places, is a pretty good gauge that the Wiimote isn't going the way of the powerglove. As for the powerglove, nothing wrong with the concept. Simply didn't have sensor technology to match the idea, but bluetooth is a far cry from light sensors on top the TV. The 360 and PS3 are using controller types that are basically the same as the NES controller, they just have more buttons and some design tweaks. If not for Nintendo Sony and MS wouldn't even have been able to steal the analog stick concept, which was first out on the N64.Technolgy has to go somewhere, there really isn't going to be any more space for yet new buttons on the same control idea that's been around since the 80's. ambro 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2009 I've found there are few good games for the Wii, but the ones that are fun are REALLY fun, and long-lasting. My list, in order from most fun, is Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Tiger Woods 09, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports (bowling especially). As has been said, the Wii is not meant for hardcore gaming, or even mild-core gaming. It is made to have fun, and that's about it. It accomplished its goal, too.Kind of a side note, those of you who do own a Wii but do not own Mario Kart, do yourself a favor and get it ASAP. Easily the best game available. RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2009 I agree, the Wiimote has been a bit limited in sports games. Part of that is the Wiimote and part of it is lazy programming. Of course I also think if the Wii hadn't sold like crack in the early 90's there probably wouldn't be Madden, NCAA titles, NHL, and other EA and 2K sports series for it. Save for maybe the golf titles where the Wiimote adds an element of realism you can't match on a standard controller.I'm looking forward to seeing Madworld, the Dead Space game for the Wii, and No More Heros 2. I'd also like to see them come out with a new Star Fox game and a totally Wii Zelda title.
