I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this place: http://www.pro-skate.com/store/index.php

According to their website, they are able to remotely fit custom skates using tracings, pictures, and other information. I am inclined to think that it would be better to be fit at a LHS, but due to my location I was looking into this. Do you think this place would be able to fit me well remotely?

Thanks for any input!

Looks interesting but I would think you would want to be face-to-face (or foot) to make sure you are getting a true custom fit. Seems like you are leaving some of the custom to chance and they can always say "you sent us the information and we did the best we could."

Maybe someone else has some expierience with them...

About 6 years ago I knew someone who got a pair of skates done that way through them. No measurements of any kind - went off of pictures. Two sizes too big.

Hmm... The form on their website now requires pictures, tracings, measurements, and the customer's feedback about their current skates and any pain they're experiencing. Maybe they learned from cases like this and made it more detailed. Still, I see the risk.

Ironically enough, I had warned someone a couple of years ago about doing online fittings. I told that person that the risk is too great and that I would not be at ease and put my reputation on the line if I submitted an order that I personally did not do myself (and at this point, I can only shake my head that it happened w/ an in-person fitting) People have a perception about custom skates and how they will feel.

Its funny you say that JR I did my first fitting online off this site or the old site before MSH. To the guy running it in Germany.......he said it was the best pair of skates he ever had?

I guess i wouldnt want to do custom but for stock wee they could get a feel for them then I wouldnt have an issue?

Jeff - I agree with you on that, I mean, you can pretty much determine what skate you need to be in based on pictures, but the skates in question, they somehow determined it ALL from the pictures. Never measured his foot. I just wouldn't do custom that way.

Regardless, sounds like they got their act together.

The vast majority of people have no need for custom skates and getting custom skates online isn't worth the risk, as previously mentioned. Is it possible they get the sizing right? Sure, but more often than not, they don't fit right.

I'm sure I don't "need" them but I have spent enough in skates that hurt my feet I'm getting some... :D

There's no guarantee that custom skates won't hurt too. It all depends on what is causing the pain.

...and that's what I'll figure out tomorrow.

As Chadd and I talked about today, I fix problems. If problems can be fixed in a stock boot, then I'll recommend that.

Exactly, it's just a shame that some dealers will sell you a custom skate just to get the extra markup.

I tried to order Limmer hiking boots using tracings and measurements once, I dont know if you guys know about hiking boots, but its like hockey where you are going to be in a lot of discomfort and waste the quality of the boot if they dont fit right.

I wasnt doing customs, but they sent me the closest retail boot to my specs and though it worked on paper, it just didnt give me the fit that I needed and I had to send them back. I would hesitate to do that again and probably wouldnt recommend it.
