Cateye Player Cage

Recommended Posts

Looking to purchase a cateye player cage. They are similar to a goalie cage but made for skaters. They were very popular with college players back in the 80s as I remember. Anyone know where I can find one?

I remember seeing them and there was a topic on them at one point.

EDIT:

Found the topic but the link is dead, no help there.

I'm looking for the same thing, I found one at an online shop ages ago but can't find it again. If you have any luck point me in the right direction please.

I refer to them as black market cages because there is a reason they aren't easy to get. Since they hit the scene improvements to the concept have been applied. Forget about sticks and other objects that can go through the 'eye-lets'. Take an elbow or shoulder to the chin you can lose a tooth or worse, as I have witnessed. If you had a real cage or just a visor the damage may be less.

One of my LHS around here used to sell them, I can't think if their site off the top of my head but I'll look into it for you guys. They were the modernized "beer league" cage. I woukd not wear one myself but each to his own.

Just mount the cage to your helmet w/ the two-clip holes on the front and one on each of the temples.

If you were to use this set up I’d also use a football style chin strap and a mouth guard because as I mentioned in a previous post this mask is archaic and the cage design has been improved many times over the years.

There's no point in wearing those cages except for the "old school style" factor. Just enough visual obstruction to be annoying and not enough protection to justify it. Also as said above the thing can do more damage than none at all. If your worried about the careless stick in your face I'd go with just a visor or play a with different group.

I had one as a kid and it was pretty simple to put on a chin cup and snap it up, that way you don't take the cage full in the face.
