CCM VECTOR 08 Rocket Runner Issue

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I got the Vector 08's in November, so thats about 5 months of use...Ive only sharpened them about 5-6 times and now i barely have any blade left and i have to change it. I get my skates sharpened at the most reputable place in my are, everyone calls the sharpener "The Doctor", so i know he didnt screw them up.

Called Reebok/CCM they told me there is nothing they can do and that i'd have to buy new blades. Anyone have a similar experience???

Also wondering what kind of steel i should put in there instead of the rocket runner? CCM PROformance Advanced (Peforated) or CCM PROformance (regular steel)

Thanks

What else did you have done to your runners? I dont think they're made to be sharpened that often.

Not made to be sharpened once a month?

I'd like to see a pic of them, and what constitutes "not enough steel to sharpen".

I dunno man something doesn't sound right

I have rocket runners since december I play 2 times a week

I've sharpened them maybe 6-7 times and I still have plenty of steel left

Wheb I bought them the salesman said they were good for at least 15-20 sharpens but according to the site there is a special way of sharpening them.

Did you have the runners profiled initially? I had mine profiled with a 11' radius, and have sharpened them 7-10 times and have PLENTY of steel left. I think that "The Doctor" could be a hack if he has sharpened them that few times and you have nothing left.

If you have no blade left, you need to replace the sharpener. It's funny how many poor sharpeners are given great acclaim.

Yeah unless you had them profiled initially there is no way, with a careful sharpener, RRunners should last only 5-6 sharpenings. I've done at least 10 sharpenings on mine, including one extra cross grinding to get rid of a large gouge from playing outdoors and I still have some steel left.

As far as anything "special" - The clamp comes down on thicker portion of the blade, and makes it slightly more annoying to line up correctly on a wheel that isn't freshly redressed.

jr, comeon. no need to boast. im sure you could get 50 out of em if you wanted to, but it seems from my knowledge, and just seeing the rr that i could also get atleast 25, if not more, and im no jr. i think you use this as an excuse to find a new sharpener, hopefully before you get your new steel.

we've got very few RocketRunners around here, but what I have seen of them I'll say this, I can definitely see a pair going very quickly if the sharpener is cross grinding them everytime like some some shops do.

Also, if the sharpener is trying to clamp on the steel instead of the plastic then it's going to seem like there's no steel left.

If it's the first problem, then you're going to have to get new steel and find a better place to get your skates sharpened at.

If it's the second, then a new sharpener might be a good idea.

the thing is, i have enough steel from the middle of the blade....its the end's that are about to touch the plastic.....im quite annoyed at this situation, i really like these blades....

unfortunatly, i know nothing about sharpeningm if i did, im sure i;d have more steel left. im for sure gonna be changing my sharpener...

i never had the skates profiled or contoured....and i get a 9/16 sharpen.

Sounds like your sharpener is giving you a banana blade- giving a full sharpen through the full sweep of the pass from plastic to plastic. I'm not expert, but this takes too much steel off since you're supposed to be putting a profiled radius on a path offset from the holder, not with the ends of the holder as points of the circle.

the blade should be as uniform all the way across as possible. inexperienced sharpeners generally go plastic to plastic instead of doing the majority of the sharpening on the thickest part of the blade, again as i was re-taught by jr i learned that and saw the life span of steel almost double opposed to banana blading skates which make people replace runners far sooner then necessary becasue the heel and the toe is completely worn off instead of conserving it. read up on sharpening and talk it over with the sharpener you use to make sure he is really an "expert" as im sure he will claim.

I would agree that "the doctor" is likely the problem.

 I've probably met more bad sharpeners than good over my years, but I have yet to meet a bad sharpener that would admit it.

I agree, see shops cross grinding for no reason. If the steels not deeply nicked why do these hacks waste their own time taking material off blades?

Need to ask-does the Good Doctor sell replacement runners?
