Jr Skates vs Sr Skates

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to replace my 852 Tacks with something that fits my feet better. I've been looking at a pair of s500, but I noticed that the Jr model (I wear a size 5 CCM) isn't exactly the same as the Sr model. Does anybody know what the differences are? And if there are any differences do all skate companies do this? Thanks.

Was that necessary?

The liner, tongue and outsole are all different from the S500 JR to SR...

I like Mission's stance on it - most kids do not need the stiffer composite outsole and boot stiffness that is offered in the senior. Other companies usually make their top-end jr the same as the sr. You pay all that money for stuff you really do not need at that level, and keep in mind that kids go through skate sizes really quickly.

EDIT - Sundin, you might be in a 6, 6.5 Mission. You'll have the senior features in those sizes.

A warning might be a no-brainer too in that case...

If you read my post, MOST are not different. He asked a specific question and did not need you chiming in from the peanut gallery.

funny you should ask this because i was wondering the same thing. I been looking at getting Graf 705's but i fit into jr. sizes (5.5 W) and i was kinda wondering if they were the same skate as the sr. version. Even though i am 24 and like the protection the 705 has i didnt know how big of a difference there was between the jr and sr skate.

personally I like it when companies put everything that they have into a jr sk8 model. If someone is gonna pay top dollar for a top end skate at the jr level then why shouldnt they get exactly what they are paying for whether lil johnie needs the extra support and features or not???? Also a few full size adults happen to be able to squeeze into a jr (mostly women) but they still want a high end skate as well. I support any company that doesnt leave out anything from jr to senior.

(Vote me as president of all things hockey and not only will I make sr and jr skates identical but Ill get us a freaking NHL season as well. It will be my christmas present to all of you!!!)

P.S. I have to disagree with you Bouce, the 705 jr is significantly softer in construction than the sr model and has a lot less support. The features (liner, outsole) are the same but some of the stiffner package was obviously taken out.

Junior skates are built for kids. Kids are not nearly as strong as adults, nor are they as heavy, therefore they do not need the same stiffness in a boot that an adult would require. Just like adults, kids should be skating in a skate that offers adequate stiffness and support, but isn't too stiff. Constructing a Jr. Pro Tack, Jr. 8000, etc. is counterproductive for the vast majority of those skates' target market.

Um...that should be a given...of course the stiffness will not be the same.

And as for the rest of your post, why jack up the prices on skates just for technology that they will not be able to take advantage of? It sucks to drop $250 when lil' Johnny's feet are growing every six months.

It's funny how some juniors use boots that "could take an anti-personel mine"... They'll never need that protective boot.

Most people who use senior skates don't need it either.

the only thing that sucks is for adults that have small feet like me. I like stiff skates but if i fit into junior sizes i might not be getting th protection that i need and want, which kinda sucks.

Why not try womens skates then? They have the same protection as mens and are made in smaller sizes. Might have to swollow a little pride but thats probably better then ending up with a broken foot.

Excelllent topic started by Sundin which we are sensitive to. We build a lower spec for all Jr skates. For an example on the Vapor XX model to name one in particular, there are 2 reinforcements that have been removed from the Sr spec. The outsole spec for the Sr is a 1.25mm Silver Texalium insert vs a 0.25mm thick Texalium insert for Jr. Nothing major but the boot is more flexible.

What is debatable is whether Sundin (or other players) should be skating in a Sr (high end modle) spec skate just because they have fallen into this size catagory or whether they should go down to a 3rd or 4th price point which may be very well more suited to their specific needs. I suppose that when palyers are ready for new skates that they are attracted to the latest & gratest so droping down in price point is not an option for them.
