Whats the best way to recover from a broken ankle injury?

Recommended Posts

I just got out of a cast and my foot hurts when i step on it. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about what i should do (exercises maybe) after i can start walking because i wont be able to go back to playing hockey right away. Thank you for your suggestion.

if the dr hasn't told you to do anything yet, i wouldn't.

I've had 6-8 month recoveries twice before and they suck, but like metalwinger said, taker your time. better to take it slowly and do it right than rush into it and hurt your ankle further delaying the recovery.

The air cast is tough, you aren't gonna burn calories anymore cuz you don't have the crutches. Watch you diet and weight. When the PT starts take it seriously, it's actually like having a personal trainer so take advantage of their expertise. Be diligent and do the exercises they give you. Bike riding is good too. When you get the go ahead for ice you should be ready to go. Good luck.

i would suggest visiting a PT regardless. you might not be able to start any kind of training right away, but at the very least, they'll provide some tips on how to avoid injury by over-compensation during your early post op days and weeks.

PT, if not prescribed by the Dr can be VERY pricey. Ask your Dr if there's any stretches or exercises you can do in the meantime.

You could just walk a lot. I'd recommend walking a lot. It exercises the joint and helps bring back range of motion. Your PT will focus on RoM and strength, walking will ease your way into that. You're on your own if you even think about jogging though.

Follow your doctors orders and don't ask people that are not trained medical personnel.
