Youth skate question suggestions

Recommended Posts

So my son got my hobbit feet.

We have had him in reeboks mainly. Started in 07 1ks in Y8, then shifted him to 05 8ks in Y9. The 8ks were to stiff for him but after pulling my head out my ass I figured out I could work the boot and loosen it up with my hands being they were so little it worked just took some time.

Anyway now the issues.

He has my horrible wide high volume feet like dad. He manages to get lace bite in the 8ks if I tighten them up even a little.

We are now in the market for a new skate as he hit a growth spurt which is not helping the lace bite issue.

OO I am asking here because shops in northern cali suck for youth skates. Each shop generally has one or two skates. many only carry a ccm v02 or a bauer vapor. One boot thats it. They also have little intrest in ordering a boot especially for a kid. I was told multiple times mybest bet was to use the internet.

We are looking at the following

Reebok 07 4k from hockey world

nike flexlite 05 v9 hockey world

bauer flexlite 2.0 from the monkey

can anyone tell me which will have the most volume. It actually looks like it might be the flexlite based on the pictures I am seeing.

Buying skates for little kids sucks when you have no shops that carry them or only carry one boot and just dont care unless your buying a pair of g5s or 0ne95s

Have you asked your LHS if they'd be willing to order the skates for your son to try on? I'm sure they'd be willing to do so if your a loyal customer. If they won't, based off pure specualtion, I'd recommend the Bauer Flexlites. They're definitely one of the highest, if not the highest volume skate I've seen at retail.

Did you not read the post? He did, they didn't want to.

To the OP:

The Bauer flexlites are probalby your best bet. Good luck though.

The new Bauer Flexlite 4.0's have a ton of volume in a D width and can even be purchased in E width.

but I believe only the Flexlite 2.0's are available in youth sizes. The 3.0 and 4.0 only have sr and jr sizes.

I struggled with this very issue for my 7 year old throughout his youth skate career. Let me start by saying that just because the adult model of a skate is known as wide or high volume, that does not always translate to Youth sizes. My son tried Bauer Flexlites, CCM Vectors, Mission Fuels, Grafs, and Bauer one 55's. For the most part the best skates he used were the old CCM Vector's, but even they caused him pain in the width area of the forefoot. We had his skates baked, punched, you name it we tried it. Then finally I stumbled upon the Reebok 7k's, and they were perfect for him, no punching necessary (though they were baked). I wish I had discovered them earlier, since he is in a 13.5 now, and we struggled through the 9,10,11's etc. with no real success. I am hoping that once he makes the moves to junior sizes there will be more, and better choices.

Good Luck, and check these 7k's out. They have been a godsend for my son.

I saw those, but the issue is Monkey doesnt allow returns on any clearance items.

So if I order them and it doesnt work out I am stuck with them which is why I was looking at the 07 4ks from hockey world no tax also :).

Over all the fit should be the same I would think being the same production year. I will say I have noticed slight sizing changes from different years as in length and boot overall depth with the ccm and rbk line the 05 model boot is different from the 07and 08 line it seems. His issue is more that has a lot of volume it wont even fit in a standard bauer, it looks funny like the foot is busting out the boot. Funny to he is skinny like me, just tall fat foot. He is an E in kids shoes but not a EE.

I dont know about the older flexlites, but these look deep.

I called monkey and lets just say the lady on the phone had no clue. First she didnt know they had them then she said they were not deep.

This sucks also because each boot manufactures boot length is different in youth boots as to be expected. A 9 in easton is about a 10 in reebok based on boots we have tried. Not sure about Bauers.

To the OP:

My son has had similar issues with youth skates. His Vapor's did not have enough volume. The supreme line have so far worked great for him, they have a lot more boot depth than the vapors. I believe the specific model he has is the one35.

How old is he?

No one has any of the one series around here at all. The only Bauer I have seen is a vapor cant remember the model. I just remember the guy pulled it out of the box, I showed him his current reebok and he put it back in the box and said sorry we have nothing. The whole thing doesnt help that he is very particular little kid especially about his feet.

Check out the thread I link to below, the CCM forum was pretty helpful. I know you have slightly different issues, but you might as well go right to the source. My understanding is that the skate and product designers actually monitor that forum. Maybe they could answer your specific needs. It can't hurt...

One last thing, you might have to sign up before you can read there, but it is no big deal.

I agree that youth skates don't correspond necessarily to adult skates in terms of fit. My 6 year old son has a fat foot (Stride-Rite wide) and his first pair of hockey skates were older Vapor VI's in a EE. Turns out they were too shallow for him (my bad), but he worked through it. His current pair are Mission AG90's. Normally I wouldn't have considered them, but I gave them a try at the LHS because that was what they had. Plenty of depth, (thanks MSH for the pencil test) and the youth E width was wide enough, which really surprised me. The Supreme 15's were too shallow, although in the adult line, they are supposed to be pretty deep.

Although in retrospect, I paid about $15-20 more for the skate compared to online, there was no way I would have even considered them, based on the adult version. Well worth the time and money we spent at the store trying to work things out. He's really happy to be on them, and I'm happy to be skating with him.
