Question about pro stock helmets

I tried searching on the forums but found nothing on this topic that has been bothering me for months now.

Every time eBay has pro stock equipment, I run into a lot of pro stock helmets. A few weeks ago, the San Jose Sharks held their Annual equipment sale. They obviously had game used/brand new pro stock helmets there.

My question is: Why is every pro stock helmet I see a size medium? Some of those guys that use a size medium are sure to have a bigger noggin than me! The helmets couldn't be tried on at the sharks sale since they were boxed, I believe.

Before I make a swing at picking up a pro stock helmet though- Question for you guys: Do the pro's just use a medium sized shell with thinner padding inside the helmet? This is the only thing I can think of that would make sense since I have trouble believing a 6 foot 2 inches hockey player has a smaller head than me. I wear a large sized Mission helmet. Then again I've never tried on a medium sized helmet to see how it feels either.

Well, what brands are you looking at? The sizes from brand to brand are not consistent. I fit in a medium Reebok and in a large Bauer. It's best to try on helmets and see what fits best.

I wasn't the first to have at the sharks' merchandise. Regardless though by the time I went, there was more smalls than mediums. But still, it's all I see around eBay in this case, just mediums. Hardly ever a large! ;(

I'm looking at a Easton Stealth helmet.

It's best to go your LHS and see how the Stealth fits and what size you would be. I know the Stealth didn't fit me right when I was looking for helmets...

If you don't have a LHS, you could always look around the forum for a thread on the S9 and S17. I'm sure you'll find something.

Most helmets are VN - can come with thinner padding than retail or can be shaved to fit.

That's why you tend to see more Ms out there.

There isn't an Medium EPP-lined helmet on the market that'll fit me, but both my CCM V08 and Bauer 4500 are Mediums and fit me perfectly.

Actually JR as of last year all had to pass CSA and HECC approval they may not have come with stickers but the VN foam was normal thickness. No more is there thinner foam.

Perhaps "altered" with thinner padding than retail would be a better way to put it.
