Skate Profiling

Recommended Posts

I just bought myself a pair of One95 skates and I was thinking of getting them profiled. I would classify myself as more of a smaller (5"8" 160 lbs), quick footed, shifty type of player so I want a skate that performs to my style of play. I read that the One95s are made for more of a power skater with longer strides, hence the longer LS2.1 blade. I still decided to go with them as they fit better on me than the X 60s and vapor XXXXs. Has anybody here had experience with skate profiling and would you recommend it? Can the One95 be customized to my style of play and skate more like a Vapor through profiling? I'm upgrading from Vapor 6s (12 years old), can't wait to try these puppies out.

P.S. Anybody who's skated on the One95s. How do you like them?

Thanks

first off welcome to the forum!

secondly - I wouldn't personally hang up on the pure marketing blurb re Vapors better suited for agility & Supremes for power - I had XXXX before & got zero out of them simply because I couldn't get them to fit right

on the other hand I had One95 for almost a year and it's the best skate I've ever had - very responsive

with that vapors & supremes out of the box come out with different profiles - 9' vs 10'. I didn't like longer radius & so simply profiled One95s to 9' - problem solved

re LS2.1 steel - I did compare it side by side with identically profiled LS2 steel, and from what I could see non of the extra blade in 2.1 touches the ice, so one less reason to worry about - just enjoy the new skates, they're worth it!

Thanks for the response. That helps put my mind at ease. When you pay $700 for skate you want to make sure they are the right skate. I will be getting mine profiled. Gonna play on them tonight. Cant wait....

It sounds like your a smaller forward and based of your style of play you described it sounds like a 8' or 9' Profile would suit you best.

not to sound like a complete noob, but what exactly is profiling?

Changing the shape of the bottom of the skate blade to change how much it contacts the ice and how you stand on it. You can change the radius to put more or less blade on the ice at a time, which affects glide and turning, and you can also pitch the skate to put you more on your toes or toward your heel.

For example, I have a 9' radius on my blade, so a better ability to turn and a little less glide, and a forward pitch to put me on my toes.

Before I type this I know this seems a little over kill and I am okay with that :D

Figured I would bump this instead of starting a new thread.

Son will be 4 next month and started in minimites. He is skating on Tacks currently as he has my feet. Been skating a little over a year and making good progress. He is holding his own with the 5-6s. That said I notice sometimes he seems to be back on his heels when trying to stride. When he does this you can see his balance is off. I talked to the guys at noicing about profiling and they recommend it for kids. I am thinking about doing this, but just wanted to know if anyone else has input on this good or bad.

So basically forward profiling for youths yeah or no provided you have some knowledge or experience in this area?

If you can have the skates looked at by an experienced sharpener he'll let you know what the steels at now, hopefully watch your son skate and make a recomendation. Its possible the 'back on heels/ off balance is not the profile....Many beginner skaters don't bend the knees enough, often bending at the waist to appear low. Try to get your boy bending at the knees, gradually improving if that is the problem. Being out the cliche 2 inches past skate toes will bring his body geometry forward and get him more on the balls of his feet....off his heels.

Little trick on stance improvement- after 2-3 sessions (don't introduce too much at once) working on knee bend with young skaters introduce the toe snap....finish stride with a toe kick. It keeps them down and eliminates the shorter stride that often results from youngsters attempting to master skating with a deeper knee bend.

Keep it fun, enjoy that beginners stage; it goes too fast.

Thanks for the advice, guess I will try to do pubskate with him and work on this.

As to the fun, I actually didnt want to put him in minimites yet. Part cost part at almost 4 he still has issues following the more complicated drills which require him to do multiple things. Also didnt want to fork out the 1000 for the season. He is there because all his buddies from the hockey1 class transitioned to minimites and he wanted to play and stay with his buddies. I am definetly trying to keep it fun. I had a father that ruined baseball for me. After highschool I have still never played again. That said I want to help him if I can to make it as comfortable as possible. As to the knowledged sharpener, those are in pretty short supply around here. :(

You need to look at it this way: What do you want to get out of your skates that you currently aren't getting out of them? Do you want to turn better and you're willing to give up some top end speed? Then go with a shorter radius. Want more top end speed and have no issues stopping and turning? Then a longer radius might be the better option for you. There is no default that makes you better, it's all about trade-offs and what you're willing to give up in order to get what you want.

I thought t'blades were 7, 9, 11 with the short being 7 but I could be wrong. I'm sure it's in one (or more) of the dozens of old topics on them if you want to dig it up.

Not sure where my t-blades are to check. But I agree that they give you super quick turning ability.
