Homemade wood blades

Recommended Posts

My dad just completed his first prototype of his homemade wood blades as a birthday gift for me. He has plans to improve the process and to make some molds for curves. I was surprised with how nice they turned out for his first attempt. He used ash with fiberglass wrap. He managed to keep the whole process a secret from me over the last few months. He had a tour of the Christian factory about 10 years ago and has been contemplating trying to make them as a hobby ever since. He said the fiberglass was the hardest part. he planned on keeping the natural wood color, but it looked to messy with the wrap, so he ended up painting them black. I usually use the Lidstrom pattern, so he tried to match it without having the actual pattern to compare it to. One of the tenons is uncut in case I wanted tapered blades.

Wow.

Your dad is a pretty cool guy, and the blades look pretty healthy. Make sure you drop a note about how version 1.0 worked?

I made a hockey stick once in wood shop in HS, didn't come out too good.

I don't have a scale, but they feel a tad heavier when comparing them to a standard wood blade as the ones he made were a little thicker than a blade from a factory. Also, the hozel and tenon are not laminated, but a solid piece of ash. We'll try laminating some strips of fiberglass on the next ones. I may also try laminating the blade and sanding it a little thinner. He won't be mass producing them anytime soon due to the time it takes (it's more for fun than anything). I'll have to admit, when you inspect them in person the minor flaws are a lot easier to see than in the pictures.

looks awesome...tell him to keep it going, maybe you'll figure something out the big companies haven't yet ;)

then patent it and collect the licensing fees for 20 years.

I'm overcome with a warm fuzzy american dream feelings.

That's awesome. I wonder how they'd hold up being solid rather than laminate?

I'd hate to break one of them if he put a lot of time into it, but then again, get one of your favorite players to sign it and keep it as a collectible.
