Mouthguards

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, I've had a dentist mouthguard for a year or two now, but have not worn it because of the fact it makes me gag. Does this happen to any of you guys? Are there any solutions to this? I am going to start using a mouthguard this season, and would like to solve this problem.

Describe it a bit more - What specifically makes you gag? the taste of it? odor? - does it push on your throat (in a un-aggressive) way when you close your mouth completely?

I noticed I gagged a bit when I was getting used to having a mouth guard in my mouth. But this was because I was trying to push my self to the very limit... I can't really explain what made me gag, but without the mouth guard & when I'd push my self on drills - The gag effect was never there.

My first mouth guard was a shock-doc DNA one. It was a good mouth guard - but maybe the thickness had something to do with me gagging... All I know, right now, I'm using a custom fitted one from my dentist - and it's thin enough to where it doesn't effect my air passage, breathing through the mouth & my speech isn't all jacked up like it was with the shock-doctor.

This was my experience.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. I can't really explain it. It's not the taste or odor. It's a thicker mouthguard from the dentists that I've seen. I wanted a thin clear one that I've seen around, but it's a thicker material. I've cut some off the back which has helped a bit. But I think it has to do with the breathing. I might just resort to getting a clear/thin dentist mouthguard.

IT may have to do with the thickness in general. I didn't really notice it but the shock-doctor did press up against my throat. When I went to my dentist to get a custom made one - he looked at my shock-doc and told me to put it on and describe what was felt in the mouth.. Surprisingly enough, the throat starts earlier within the mouth than most people think....

Anyway, The only reason I went with a custom piece is because my LHS's didn't have any of the RBK strapped or strapless- mouth guards. My team mate has one of those & he loves it. it's about 50 $'s though ;-x

RBK mouthguard

*ugh edited due to lots of typos ;(

For an over-the-counter MG, I think the Shock Doc DNA is very good. I wore a custom fitted MG for a long time. I tried the DNA MG and like it a lot more. The custom fitted MG was too tight. I had to pull it out. The DNA seems to make saliva in my mouth which is fine. Just my two cents.

I also recommend the shock doctor gravity. For me it felt better and I could talk with it in. I also had to trim the back of the guard. If fit much better.

I have a PRO-TEKT custom mouthguard, it's easily the best mouthguard I've ever used. I went with the SAFEguard, which cost $35... rather good deal if you ask me.

I had the same problem with gagging so I've been going without. I don't want to hijack a post but what would be a good mouthguard for someone with an overbite.

Does the gravity cover the front of your teeth? As I am wearing a visor, that is my main concern.

i went to the dentist and got a custom one made for about $55CDN.

no gagging, easy to breathe/drink/talk with it in. I wear this with an hs22 visor and it works great. i took two sticks to the mouth during summer season. Came out with all my chompers intact and i'm certain that i would have lost one had i not been wearing it.

No, I just got a dentist about a month or two ago. I'll have to give them a call.

I'm a fan of the Shock Doctor Gravity mouthguard. Goes on your bottom teeth instead of the top. I don't gag as much with the Gravity as I did with any other higher-end top-teeth guard. I can breathe a little better with it, too.

Gag Test - if you take your fingers (wash em first) and reach back into your mouth and touch the side of your tounge - near your back teeth - it tends to feel like the beginnings of a gag reflex.

Anywhere else and it dosen't have that effect. Perhaps your guard is touching that spot and it feels like gagging. Perhaps cutting it down at that spot but keeping it between all yout teeth is the answer.

+1 for the gravity. I can't even put a top teeth guard in without gagging. The Gravity is really good and you still can talk with it in. The problem for you is that it specifically says on the package that it is designed for sports with full facial protection, so I am not sure I would wear it with just a visor. It really guards your teeth from knocking together when you get hit, and doesn't offer much direct protection from a hit to the mouth.

Dougie, since you already have the mouth guard from your dentist, you might as well keep trying to trim it until it's comfortable before spending more money. I tried both the Power Gel Ultra and the Gravity before getting a dentist custom. The custom didn't cause gagging as much because it stayed in place better than the other two. After trimming the custom twice, I don't have any problems with the mouth guard now.
